Job description

Summary/Objective
The Pig Production Technician is a position specializing in the daily pork production activities within the farrowing and/or gestation departments. This position involves working in an agricultural environment with continuous hands-on interaction with livestock and regular structured routines.


Essential Functions


  1. Ensure the highest standards of the humane treatment of animals.
  2. Follow the farm's bio-security protocols at all times.
  3. Monitor and assist with feeding systems and ensure animals are fed and watered according to respective protocols
  4. Maintain and monitor overall animal health, care and treatment of animals.
  5. Perform routine and seasonal vaccinations and injections as directed.
  6. Perform general facility cleaning, maintenance, and hygiene.
  7. Power wash following the farm's cleaning and disinfection processes, including to pre-check, performing the appropriate preparation, abiding by the safety protocols and ensuring the equipment is in effective and efficient working order.
  8. Assist with the recording and maintaining of accurate production records and documentation.
  9. Follow all safety policies and procedures; and communicate any potential hazards and near misses to the Department Lead or Manager.
  10. Perform heat checking and the breeding/insemination processes
  11. Monitor, test and care for pregnant sows.
  12. Assist with weaning of piglets and movement of animals between barns and departments.
  13. Prepare the farrow rooms, assist in the proper farrowing of sows and day one pig care.
  14. Assist in the fostering of piglets.
  15. Process and castrate piglets.
  16. Adjust and hang heat lamps as required, check on heat mats.

Work Environment


While performing the duties of this job, the employee has constant exposure to dust, animal dander and odor. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Employees stand and walk on concrete for most of their shift. Seasonally, the employee is exposed to a variety of extreme conditions within the barn that include heat and humidity.


Physical Demands


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to move throughout the farm; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, balance, climb, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) weight of up to 50 pounds. Position requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp. Frequently required, for extended periods of time, to stand, walk, stoop, reach with hands and arms, kneel, bend at the waist, climb, perform repetitive motions, and communicate.


Basic Qualifications

  • Regular and consistent attendance.
  • For positions that require travel to another barn location(s), a valid driver's license and insurable driving record is required.

  • Must attain TQA and PQA+ certification within the first sixty (60) days of employment. Thereafter, must maintain TQA and PQA+ certification status.

  • Previous pork production experience is preferred.

El Tecnico de Produccion Porcina es un puesto especializado en las actividades diarias de produccion porcina en los departamentos de parto y/o gestacion.
Este puesto implica trabajar en un entorno agricola con interaccion practica continua con el ganado y rutinas regulares y estructuradas. Funciones Esenciales Garantizar los mas altos estandares de trato humano a los animales. Seguir los protocolos de bioseguridad de la granja en todo momento. Supervisar y asistir en los sistemas de alimentacion y asegurar que los animales reciban alimento y agua de acuerdo con los protocolos correspondientes. Mantener y supervisar la salud, el cuidado y el tratamiento general de los animales. Realizar las vacunas e inyecciones rutinarias y estacionales segun se indique. Realizar la limpieza, el mantenimiento y la higiene general de las instalaciones. Lavar a presion siguiendo los procesos de limpieza y desinfeccion de la granja, incluyendo la verificacion previa, la preparacion adecuada, el cumplimiento de los protocolos de seguridad y la garantia de que el equipo funcione de forma eficaz y eficiente. Asistir en el registro y mantenimiento de registros y documentacion de produccion precisos. Seguir todas las politicas y procedimientos de seguridad.
Comunicar cualquier peligro potencial o cuasi accidente al Jefe o Gerente de Departamento. Realizar la verificacion de celo y los procesos de reproduccion/inseminacion. Monitorear, realizar pruebas y cuidar a las cerdas gestantes. Asistir en el destete de los lechones y el traslado de animales entre establos y departamentos. Preparar las salas de parto, asistir en el correcto parto de las cerdas y el cuidado de los cerdos desde el primer dia. Asistir en la adopcion temporal de lechones. Procesar y castrar a los lechones. Entorno laboral Al realizar las tareas de este puesto, el empleado esta constantemente expuesto al polvo, la caspa de los animales y el olor.
El nivel de ruido en el entorno laboral suele ser alto.
Los empleados permanecen de pie y caminan sobre concreto durante la mayor parte de su turno.
Estacionalmente, el empleado esta expuesto a diversas condiciones extremas dentro del establo, como calor y humedad. Exigencias Fisicas Las exigencias fisicas descritas aqui son representativas de las que debe cumplir un empleado para desempenar con exito las funciones esenciales de este puesto. Al desempenar las tareas de este puesto, el empleado debe tener habilidades de deambulacion suficientes para desplazarse por la granja;
asi como la capacidad de estar de pie, caminar, agacharse, arrodillarse, mantenerse en cuclillas, mantener el equilibrio, trepar y manipular (levantar, cargar, mover) pesos de hasta 23 kg.
El puesto requiere buena coordinacion ojo-mano, destreza en brazos, manos y dedos, incluyendo la capacidad de agarrar.
Con frecuencia, durante periodos prolongados, se requiere estar de pie, caminar, agacharse, alcanzar objetos con las manos y los brazos, arrodillarse, doblarse por la cintura, trepar, realizar movimientos repetitivos y comunicarse. Requisitos Basicos Respeto y cuidado de los animales. Capacidad para realizar operaciones matematicas basicas como sumas, restas y multiplicaciones. Capacidad para comunicarse con claridad y eficacia.
Asistencia regular y constante. Para puestos que requieran desplazamientos a otras instalaciones, se requiere licencia de conducir vigente y un historial de conduccion asegurable. Capacidad para conducir minicargadoras. Debe obtener la certificacion TQA y PQA+ dentro de los primeros sesenta (60) dias de empleo.
Posteriormente, debe mantener la certificacion TQA y PQA+. Experiencia deseable Se valora la experiencia previa en produccion porcina.
