What is a PICC RN?

A PICC RN is a Registered Nurse who specializes in the insertion, care, and management of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs). These nurses are trained to place PICC lines, which are long, thin tubes inserted through a vein in the arm and advanced to a large vein near the heart, typically for long-term intravenous therapy or medications. PICC RNs are skilled in sterile procedures, patient education, and monitoring for complications such as infections or thrombosis. They often work in hospitals, infusion centers, or home healthcare settings.

What are some common challenges PICC RNs face when coordinating care between different departments?

PICC RNs often encounter challenges when coordinating with multiple departments, such as radiology, infection control, and the primary care team. Timely communication is crucial to ensure proper scheduling for line placements, troubleshooting complications, and maintaining sterile technique. Balancing workload and managing urgent requests while adhering to safety protocols can be demanding, but strong organizational and interpersonal skills help facilitate smooth collaboration and high-quality patient care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PICC RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PICC RN, you need in-depth knowledge of vascular access, IV therapy, and infection control, typically supported by RN licensure and specialized training in PICC line insertion. Familiarity with ultrasound guidance systems, electronic health records (EHRs), and adherence to certification standards like Vascular Access Board Certification (VA-BC) are crucial. Strong patient education skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork help PICC RNs excel in both technical procedures and patient care. These skills ensure safe, accurate line placement, minimize complications, and support optimal patient outcomes in various clinical settings.

Job description

Cleveland Clinic's Neurological Institute is growing with a new state-of-the-art facility designed to transform care for patients with complex neurological conditions. Bringing outpatient, surgical, imaging, and inpatient services together under one roof, this expansion creates exciting opportunities for caregivers to learn, grow and collaborate across specialties. Join a nationally recognized team and help deliver innovative, compassionate care in a world-class environment.

The Registered Nurse in Imaging within the Neurological Institute is a unique blended specialty role that offers the opportunity to practice across multiple areas, including Vascular Access, Interventional Radiology, and Diagnostic Imaging.

Through a phased onboarding and cross-training approach, nurses are supported in building the knowledge, technical skills, and confidence needed to succeed in this evolving specialty role. This position is ideal for experienced nurses who enjoy learning, value variety in their practice, and are interested in expanding their expertise beyond a single clinical area.

As part of the new Neurological Institute, nurses will join a growing specialty team and contribute to the development of a new model of care in a state-of-the-art environment.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Provide professional nursing care to patients undergoing neurological interventional radiology procedures, CT and MRI exams, and vascular access procedures before, during, and after care delivery

  • Perform comprehensive nursing assessments, monitor patients throughout procedures and recovery, document findings, and communicate changes in condition to the appropriate members of the care team

  • Perform nursing procedures and administer treatments and medications in accordance with established standards and protocols

  • Establish individualized plans of care in collaboration with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary care team

  • Coordinate ongoing care, identify discharge needs, and facilitate safe discharge planning

  • Provide patient and family education related to procedures, treatments, medications, and ongoing care needs

  • Maintain competency across assigned specialty areas through ongoing education, training, and clinical practice

  • Collaborate with nurses, technologists, physicians, and other team members to provide safe, efficient, patient-centered care

  • Cross-cover other nursing roles within the department as needed to support patient care and team operations

  • Contribute to quality improvement, patient safety, and the ongoing development of the Neurological Institute imaging program

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (Diploma, ADN, or BSN program)

  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

  • One year of recent experience as an RN

  • Offset: Licensed RN with at least 2 years of LPN experience within the same Cleveland Clinic procedural department may substitute for required RN experience

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Two years of recent RN experience in an acute care, procedural, or specialty setting

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

  • Previous experience in Vascular Access, Interventional Radiology, CT, MRI, procedural nursing, or another specialty environment

  • Experience caring for patients undergoing diagnostic or interventional procedures

  • Demonstrated adaptability, critical thinking, and ability to learn new clinical skills

  • In areas operating with Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICC Lines), Certified Registered Nurse Infusion (CRNI) or Vascular Access Board Certified (VA-BC) certification is preferred within three years of hire
