How much do physics simulation jobs pay per year?
What is a physics simulation?
A Physics Simulation job involves developing and implementing mathematical models to replicate real-world physical behaviors in software. Professionals in this field work with physics engines, numerical methods, and programming to simulate motion, collisions, fluid dynamics, or other physical phenomena. These simulations are used in industries such as gaming, film VFX, engineering, and scientific research to test and visualize complex systems. Strong skills in physics, programming (e.g., C++, Python), and computational techniques are essential for success in this role.
What are the typical daily tasks and responsibilities for someone working in physics simulation?
Professionals in Physics Simulation spend much of their day developing, testing, and refining computational models to represent physical phenomena, often collaborating with engineers and scientists to define simulation objectives. Responsibilities may include writing or optimizing code, analyzing simulation outputs, adjusting parameters to improve accuracy, and documenting methodologies and results. You might also participate in team meetings to review project milestones, discuss findings, and recommend design or process improvements based on your simulations. The role often involves both independent technical work and cross-disciplinary cooperation, making adaptability and clear communication important for success.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the physics simulation position, and why are they important?
To thrive in a Physics Simulation role, you need a solid background in physics, mathematics, and computer science, often supported by a relevant STEM degree. Proficiency in simulation software (such as MATLAB, ANSYS, or COMSOL), programming languages (like Python or C++), and familiarity with numerical modeling systems are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective collaboration and communication abilities are highly valued in this field. These competencies ensure accurate simulation results, efficient teamwork, and the ability to tackle complex real-world challenges in research or industry settings.

Job description
Application close date:
Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed. At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.As part of a small, hardworking and accomplished team of specialists, you will be responsible for crafting, developing, validating, and upgrading the simulation infrastructure used to train Blue's launch crews. You will work in a fast-paced and often uncertain environment, providing to innovative solutions, while demonstrating individual leadership, technical competence, and attention to detail. This position includes both simulation software development tasks and hands-on design, development, and test tasks.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Design, analyze, implement, and revise the software design and programming of mathematical models of New Glenn, orbital launch site, and all associated subsystems using first principles and test data. These models will be used for Launch Operators training and procedure development
Develop and implement simulation architectures and models suitable for real-time software-in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware-in-the loop (HIL) testing
Develop and maintain model documentation and databooks
Document and assist engineers across the company in developing the products required to implement Blue's simulations
Support systems analysis and have a cross-functional mindset to support system level architectural decisions
Assist in the development of verification and validation procedures to ensure all model products perform as specified to meet system and subsystem requirements
Support the development and execution of component-level test programs including integrated on-site testing and post-test analysis to support model verification
Support launch crew trainings by preparing and operating the simulator during training sessions
Minimum Qualifications:
Educational and work experience:
Bachelor's degree in aerospace, computer science, electrical, or mechanical engineering, physics, or related field
7+ years of relevant experience
Knowledge of dynamic modeling, including multi-body dynamics, gas dynamics, fluids, thermodynamics
Experience with Windows, Linux, Python, real time operating systems, serial communications, IP networking, and embedded systems
Strong software and model development skills, particularly in MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape
Knowledge of common programming languages such as C/C++, Python
Highly organized and capable of planning and working with technical peers across a variety of domains (e.g., guidance, control, aerodynamics, propulsion, mechanical, fluid, electrical, thermal)
Hands-on experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing and test development
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in sensor modeling (e.g., pressure, temperature, etc.)
Experience with electro-mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical subsystems
Experience anchoring/fitting first principles models to test data or high-fidelity external simulations using numerical methods
Experience developing and verifying physical models for the purpose of control design, component sizing, and system performance evaluation
Ability to continuously manage risk and be comfortable with lean software development techniques
Proven system engineering, configuration management skills
