How much do physics engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for physics engineer in Illinois is $114,601.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $85,600.00 and $140,200.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Are physics engineers highly paid?

Physics engineers typically earn competitive salaries due to their specialized knowledge in applying physics principles to engineering problems. Salaries vary based on experience, location, and industry, but they are generally above the average for engineering roles. Advanced skills in simulation tools and research experience can also influence compensation levels.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a physics engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Physics Engineer, you need a strong background in physics, mathematics, and engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with simulation software (such as COMSOL or ANSYS), laboratory instrumentation, and data analysis tools is commonly required in this role. Problem-solving ability, analytical thinking, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills for Physics Engineers. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing, testing, and implementing innovative solutions to complex technical challenges in research and industry.

What does a physics engineer do?

A Physics Engineer applies principles of physics and engineering to design, develop, and improve products, processes, or technologies. They often work in industries such as aerospace, electronics, energy, and manufacturing, using their expertise to solve complex technical problems. Their responsibilities can include conducting experiments, modeling physical systems, analyzing data, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to bring innovative solutions from concept to reality. Physics Engineers bridge the gap between theoretical science and practical engineering applications.

What is the difference between Physics Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectPhysics EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Physics, Engineering, or related fieldsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, R&D departments, technology firmsManufacturing, design firms, automotive, aerospace
Industry UsageHigh-tech industries, research institutions, defenseManufacturing, product design, energy sectors

Physics Engineers focus on applying physics principles to develop new technologies and conduct research, often working in labs or R&D settings. Mechanical Engineers design, analyze, and manufacture mechanical systems, working in industries like automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing. While both roles require strong engineering fundamentals, Physics Engineers tend to emphasize research and theoretical applications, whereas Mechanical Engineers focus on practical design and production.

How does a physics engineer typically collaborate with multidisciplinary teams during project development?

Physics Engineers often work alongside electrical, mechanical, and software engineers, as well as researchers and project managers, to develop innovative solutions. Collaboration usually involves sharing experimental data, integrating physics-based models with engineering designs, and participating in regular team meetings to align goals and troubleshoot challenges. Effective communication and a willingness to translate complex physical concepts into practical applications are key to ensuring project success and fostering a productive team environment.

Job description

Wheaton College invites applications for part time Guest Instructor or Guest Assistant Professor in Physics or Engineering for the 2025-26 academic year.

The successful candidate will teach either one lecture or 1-2 labs in the undergraduate physics or engineering major curriculum. We seek applicants with a M.S. or Ph. D. in Physics, Astronomy, Engineering or a closely related field, who will engage a diverse student body with an active-learning model that challenges and supports each student. Previous teaching experience, including experience with evidence-based curricula and hands-on laboratory instruction, is highly valued. The ability to mentor physics and engineering majors and general education students in the integration of Christian faith with the life of the mind and the practice of physics and engineering is also an important component of this position.

Salary range:  $935 per credit hour for a faculty member with an MA and fewer than 3 years of experience teaching at Wheaton - $1100 per credit hour for a faculty member with a PhD.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Interested individuals should send a curriculum vitae and a letter of interest that clearly articulates the candidate's approach to physics and engineering instruction and capacity to spiritually mentor students by drawing on his or her own experience in the Christian faith. Additional application materials will be mailed to promising candidates.

WHEATON COLLEGE is an evangelical Protestant Christian liberal arts college whose faculty and staff affirm a Statement of Faith and adhere to lifestyle expectations of the Wheaton College Community Covenant. Wheaton is an equal opportunity employer committed to recruiting and retaining a diverse and talented workforce and student body. We encourage the expression of multiple perspectives within a Christian worldview, inside and outside the classroom. For more information about Wheaton College visit www.wheaton.edu. Additionally, Wheaton College aspires to provide a physically safe environment for students, staff, and faculty to learn and work. In support of this objective, the College requires background checks for final candidates, after an employment offer is extended. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
