Our organization, in collaboration with a prominent health system's Cancer Institute, is excited to announce an opening for the position of Deputy Physician-in-Chief for Surgical Oncology. We are on the lookout for an outstanding, innovative, and visionary board-certified surgical oncologist and physician executive who can lead and unify surgical cancer care within one of the largest health systems in the nation, catering to the greater metropolitan New York area.

This role will report directly to the Physician-in-Chief and Executive Director of the Cancer Institute. The Deputy Physician-in-Chief for Surgical Oncology will oversee all surgical oncology initiatives across the health system, collaborating closely with the Deputy Physicians-in-Chief for Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology, as well as regional and hospital cancer leaders throughout New York City, Long Island, Westchester, Hudson Valley, and Connecticut. This position presents a unique opportunity to influence and enhance multidisciplinary surgical cancer programs across various disease sites within a vast healthcare network, serving a remarkably diverse patient demographic.

In the capacity of Deputy Physician-in-Chief for Surgical Oncology, the selected leader will be responsible for formulating and implementing a comprehensive strategic vision for surgical oncology services across the system. This includes overseeing quality, efficiency, and accessibility of care across all disease sites and settings. By working closely with the Deputy Physicians-in-Chief for Medical and Radiation Oncology, relevant surgical department heads, and regional and hospital cancer leaders, this individual will focus on recruiting and nurturing exceptional surgeons while enhancing the national standing of surgical oncology within the Cancer Institute.

The mission of the Cancer Institute is to deliver high-quality, comprehensive cancer care in a coordinated, multidisciplinary, and compassionate manner. It serves more cancer patients than any other health system in New York, treating around 24,000 cancer patients annually across its hospitals and approximately 900 outpatient facilities. Following the acquisition of another health system, the Cancer Institute has broadened its reach into the Hudson Valley and Connecticut, evolving into a "hybrid cancer center" that merges the strengths of both academic and community cancer care.

With over 300 affiliated physicians across more than 25 subspecialties, the Cancer Institute aims to co-locate surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology whenever feasible, ensuring patients receive coordinated care close to their homes and workplaces. The surgical oncology department encompasses a wide range of cancer surgeries, with specialists delivering advanced operative care across all major disease sites, including breast, gastrointestinal, hepatopancreatobiliary, colorectal, thoracic, endocrine, melanoma and soft tissue, gynecologic, genitourinary, and head and neck cancers. Surgeons work within a multidisciplinary, disease-site-focused model alongside their medical and radiation oncology colleagues. Our surgical oncologists are committed to advancing the field through the adoption of minimally invasive and robotic techniques, performing complex multi-organ and cytoreductive resections, and pioneering innovative approaches in collaboration with the research enterprise and academic partners.

The ideal candidate for this position will be board certified by the American Board of Surgery, with fellowship training and/or certification in Complex General Surgical Oncology or a related surgical oncology field. Candidates should possess administrative and leadership experience within an academic medical center or health system, such as Chief, Division Chief, Vice Chair, Chair, or service-line leader. A proven track record in clinical, research, and teaching accomplishments is essential for appointment at the faculty level of Professor. We are looking for a nationally recognized clinical leader who is an actively practicing surgical oncologist with substantial operational experience and a history of enhancing service efficiency and quality.
