Job Summary
This position assists with manual tasks related to the handling of solid waste and litter control.
Work is performed and duties are carried out in accordance with established policies, procedures, and Borough core values: Accountability, Customer Focus, Dedication, Integrity, Responsiveness and Teamwork.

D1 - DOE
Minimum Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent.
Less than one year of experience. Relevant Experience may include jobs requiring physical labor. Experience working with and/or identifying hazardous and universal waste is preferred but not required.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alaska for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Must be at least 19 years of age with one (1) year of driving experience.
Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen, background check and physical.
Must complete the Hepatitis B vaccination series and maintain a current Tetanus (Td or Tdap) vaccination, or provide signed declinations, in accordance with applicable health and safety guidelines.
Duties/Responsibilities
  • Assists in maintaining the central landfill.
  • Processes latex paints and other universal wastes according to division policies and procedures.
  • Packs refrigerants into containers.
  • Transports universal waste from transfer sites.
  • Loads abandoned waste into vehicle for transport to landfill.
  • Assists in tagging vehicles for impound; takes photographs and collects data.
  • Cuts weeds and brush.
  • Assists with snow removal operations.
  • Answers customer questions and directs the public to waste disposal areas.
  • Performs related duties.

Temporary and Thousand Hour (1000) employees for the Mat-Su Borough do not receive a benefits package. Following is a brief description of the only benefit provided to this class of employee.
Alaska Supplemental Benefits System:
The Supplemental Benefits System (SBS) is in lieu of Social Security and is mandatory. An employee contributes at 6.13% of gross wages, matched by the Borough (6.13%), on the present wage base of $176,100.
