How much do photolithography process engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 4, 2026, the average yearly pay for photolithography process engineer in the United States is $92,018.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $74,500.00 and $103,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Photolithography Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Photolithography Process Engineer, you need a solid background in semiconductor processing, strong analytical skills, and typically a degree in electrical engineering, materials science, or a related field. Familiarity with photolithography equipment, process control systems, and statistical analysis software is essential, and certifications in semiconductor manufacturing are advantageous. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication help drive process improvements and teamwork. These skills are crucial for optimizing yield, maintaining quality standards, and supporting innovation in advanced semiconductor manufacturing environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by Photolithography Process Engineers in semiconductor manufacturing?

Photolithography Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining process stability, achieving high yield rates, and minimizing defects in wafer production. They need to troubleshoot complex issues related to photoresist coating, exposure, and development, which can be affected by equipment variations or environmental factors. Close collaboration with other engineering teams, such as equipment, integration, and quality control, is essential to address these challenges efficiently and to implement process improvements.

What does a Photolithography Process Engineer do?

A Photolithography Process Engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing, and maintaining the photolithography process used in semiconductor manufacturing. They work with advanced equipment to transfer patterns onto silicon wafers using light-sensitive chemicals and precise imaging techniques. Their duties include troubleshooting process issues, improving production yield, implementing new technologies, and collaborating with other engineering teams to ensure high-quality microchip fabrication.

What is the difference between Photolithography Process Engineer vs Semiconductor Process Engineer?

AspectPhotolithography Process EngineerSemiconductor Process Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Chemical, or Materials Engineering; relevant certificationsBachelor's in similar engineering fields; certifications vary
Work EnvironmentCleanroom environments focused on photolithography stepsCleanroom and fab environments covering multiple process steps
Industry UsagePrimarily in semiconductor fabrication involving photolithographyBroader semiconductor manufacturing, including various process stages

While both roles work within semiconductor manufacturing, a Photolithography Process Engineer specializes in the photolithography process, focusing on patterning silicon wafers. A Semiconductor Process Engineer has a broader scope, overseeing multiple fabrication steps. The roles often overlap but differ in focus and scope within the industry.

Job description

Process Engineer

We are seeking a hands on Process Engineer to join an advanced semiconductor manufacturing environment focused on developing and sustaining complex wafer fabrication processes. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working directly in the fab, owning processes end to end, and solving challenging manufacturing problems in a fast paced, technology driven setting.

What you will be doing

• Develop, optimise, and sustain wafer fabrication processes across multiple front end manufacturing steps

• Drive hands on processing in areas such as photolithography, wet chemical processing, dry etch, and thin film deposition

• Own and improve plasma based processes, including plasma etch (RIE, ICP) and or plasma deposition (PECVD, ALD, or related techniques)

• Support wafer level processing steps including thinning, scribing, cleaving, and coatings

• Apply SPC, DOE, and statistical analysis to build stable, repeatable, and scalable processes

• Perform on wafer testing, metrology, and failure analysis using tools such as SEM, FIB, EDS, AFM, and similar techniques

• Lead or support out of control responses using structured problem solving methodologies

• Partner closely with equipment engineering, technicians, and cross functional teams to improve yield, reliability, and throughput

• Contribute to technical reviews, documentation, and reporting to project teams and leadership

What we are looking for

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline

• 2 to 5 plus years of hands on semiconductor manufacturing or process engineering experience

• Strong background in wafer fab process development and sustaining

• Direct experience with plasma etch and or plasma deposition is required

• Experience working in a cleanroom environment and running tools independently

• Strong analytical and problem solving skills with experience using statistical or data analysis tools such as JMP, R, or Python

• Comfortable working in a small, agile team and taking ownership of multiple responsibilities

• Clear communicator who works well across engineering, operations, and leadership teams

Additional details

• On site role at a semiconductor wafer fabrication facility in Fremont, California

• Hands on presence in the fab is required

• Role is subject to US export control requirements and therefore requires US person status
