Medical Assistant (Triage) - Sevierville, TN
Knoxville Dermatology Group is seeking a skilled and compassionate Clinical Triage Specialist to join our growing team in Sevierville, TN. This role serves as the vital first line of clinical communication, ensuring that patients receive timely, accurate, and prioritized dermatological care. The ideal candidate will use clinical judgment to evaluate incoming medical inquiries, manage teledermatology photo submissions, and coordinate urgent scheduling pathways under provider-established protocols.
Location: Sevierville, TN (On-site)
Schedule: Monday - Friday | 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Knoxville Dermatology Group (KDG) is one of the largest groups of board certified dermatologists in Tennessee. All of our physicians are board-certified with extensive dermatology experience. With thirteen providers between two locations, West Knoxville & Sevierville, we are able to treat our patients for all of their dermatology needs.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
  • Phone & Portal Triage Management: Promptly monitor, evaluate, and respond to incoming patient calls, portal inquiries, and "Nurse Line" messages.
  • Care Prioritization: Evaluate patient symptoms or photo submissions under standard protocols to route urgent issues-such as suspicious spots or severe rashes-to providers for priority booking.
  • Pathology & Lab Results Coordination: Review incoming pathology and laboratory reports with providers and deliver findings and follow-up instructions directly to patients.
  • Specialty Procedure Scheduling: Coordinate and schedule specialized surgeries, Mohs procedures, or advanced treatments, counseling patients thoroughly on what to expect.
  • Medication & Authorization Support: Provide patient education regarding prescribed dermatological medications and manage prior authorizations for specialty pharmaceuticals or biologic therapies.
  • Provider Clinical Alignment: Provide comprehensive administrative back-office support by preparing medical documents, logging pathology records, and answering patient questions under direct physician guidelines.

Qualifications
Qualifications and Skills
  • Education & Credentials: High school graduate or GED required. Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program, Certified Nursing Assistant program, or pre-PA/pre-med track preferred. CPR certification preferred.
  • Experience: 1-2 years of Medical Assistant or clinical desk/triage experience. Previous dermatology experience is highly preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Experience navigating Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems (knowledge of EMA/Modernizing Medicine is a plus).
  • Core Competencies: Exceptional phone etiquette, active listening, basic knowledge of skin health medical terminology, and strong multitasking capabilities.

Licensure/Certifications/Education
Education and Experience:
  • High School Graduate or GED required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant Program, Certified Nursing Assistant program or completion of a bachelor's degree program in the pre-med or pre-physician assistant track preferred.
  • CPR certified preferred.
  • 1-2 years of recent experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, or other clinical patient care experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in Dermatology is preferred.

Physical Requirements:
  • Standing and walking for extended periods of time
  • Moderate amount of talking, bending, twisting, reaching, and balancing.
  • Use of hands and fingers.
  • Talking and listening in person and on the telephone.
  • Handling of materials such as paper, supplies, etc.
  • Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds.
  • Risk of exposure to infectious organisms and the possibility of injury due to chemicals and sharp objects.
