How much do phonology jobs pay per hour?
What is phonology?
A Phonology job involves studying the sound systems of languages, including how speech sounds are organized, produced, and understood. Phonologists analyze phonetic patterns, linguistic rules, and variations in pronunciation across languages or dialects. They work in academic research, language development, speech therapy, or computational linguistics. Their expertise helps in areas like language teaching, artificial intelligence, and speech recognition technology.
What are some typical research and collaboration activities involved in a phonologist's role?
Phonologists often spend their time conducting fieldwork, analyzing speech data, and developing theoretical models of sound systems in different languages. They may collaborate with other linguists, speech therapists, computational linguists, or language documentation teams to analyze or document diverse phonological phenomena. Many positions involve frequent presentations at conferences, publishing research findings, and sometimes teaching at universities or training students. This blend of independent research and teamwork allows phonologists to contribute both to academic knowledge and to practical applications in language development and technology.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the phonology position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Phonologist, you need a strong background in linguistics with a specialization in phonological theory and analysis, often supported by an advanced degree such as an MA or PhD in Linguistics. Familiarity with software tools like Praat, ELAN, and other linguistic analysis platforms, as well as experience in data collection and statistical analysis, is highly beneficial. Excellent analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help professionals in this field collaborate effectively and present complex findings to diverse audiences. These competencies are vital for accurately analyzing speech patterns, developing theories, and contributing to academic or applied language research.

About ExcelPrep
ExcelPrep is a mission-driven private program serving neurodiverse children through structured, research-based instruction. Our mission is simple: improve the academic and social success of neurodiverse learners. We deliver high-quality academic and therapeutic programming that supports meaningful learning outcomes.
ExcelPrep offers two distinct programs for learners ages 3-13:
- PreK-8 Academic Program: Direct Instruction and Precision Teaching for core academics (reading, writing, math) in a structured, data-driven environment.

- Provide coaching and resources to staff on strategies to support communication in the classroom and home environments
Responsibilities
