Lead Phlebotomist - RWJBarnabas Health

A typical day for a Lead Phlebotomist may include:
  • Assuming responsibility in the absence of the supervisor, assisting with the supervisory and administrative functions of the section.
  • Collecting and preparing blood and other specimens for laboratory testing using approved patient identification methods and precise point-of-collection labeling.
  • Performing venipuncture and capillary blood collection following established protocols, while monitoring patients for adverse reactions.
  • Preparing and transporting specimens to the laboratory under proper conditions and assisting with specimen accessioning duties, including the operation and maintenance of automated equipment.
  • Maintaining collection equipment, ensuring supply availability, and documenting collection details accurately in laboratory systems.
  • Reviewing and updating standard operating procedures while developing and monitoring critical quality control and quality assurance processes.
  • Training, mentoring, and evaluating new staff and students, including assisting the supervisor with competency evaluations and documentation.
  • Assisting with investigations and service recovery following patient complaints or non-conforming events.
  • Adhering to RWJBH Organizational competencies, standards of behavior, and executing other duties or projects as assigned.

To be considered for this Lead Phlebotomist opportunity:
  • You are passionate about supporting laboratory services and pathology operations while helping create a safe, respectful, and highly precise clinical environment.
  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program OR medical laboratory technology program with phlebotomy training is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in phlebotomy, specifically performing blood and specimen collection procedures is required.
  • Prior experience as a Lead Phlebotomist is preferred, with a background in administrative tasks related to phlebotomy or central specimen processing.
  • Possess intermediate knowledge of venipuncture and capillary collection techniques, anatomy relevant to collection, specimen labeling/handling, infection control, safety protocols, and standardized collection procedures required.
  • Full Time Day shift, 40 hours per week. (5:30am - 2:00pm).
  • Required to work alternating weekends and occasional evening or night shifts based on operational needs. Responsibility includes managing the schedule, addressing call-outs, and securing shift coverage.
