How much do phd science jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for phd science in Colorado is $50,884.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $40,500.00 and $54,700.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PhD scientist?

To thrive as a PhD Scientist, you need advanced expertise in your scientific discipline, strong research skills, and a doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant field. Familiarity with specialized laboratory equipment, data analysis software (such as R or Python), and publication processes is typically required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for presenting complex findings and collaborating with peers. These skills and qualifications are crucial for driving innovative research, producing publishable results, and contributing to scientific advancement.

What is a PhD in science?

A PhD in Science is the highest academic degree awarded in scientific fields such as biology, chemistry, physics, or environmental science. It typically involves several years of advanced coursework, followed by original research that contributes new knowledge to the field. Graduates must defend a dissertation before a panel of experts. Earning a PhD in Science prepares individuals for careers in academia, research, industry, and leadership roles within scientific organizations.

What is the difference between Phd Science vs Data Scientist?

AspectPhd ScienceData Scientist
Required CredentialsPhD in a scientific field, research experienceBachelor's or Master's in CS, stats, or related field; often a PhD preferred
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, academia, industry R&DTech companies, finance, healthcare, consulting
Industry UsageResearch roles, scientific analysis, product developmentData analysis, machine learning, predictive modeling

While both roles involve analytical skills and data handling, Phd Science focuses on scientific research and experimentation, often in academic or R&D settings. Data Scientists primarily analyze large datasets to inform business decisions and develop models in industry environments. The key difference lies in their application areas and typical work environments.

What are the typical career advancement paths for someone with a PhD in science in academia and industry?

Individuals with a PhD in Science often start in postdoctoral or entry-level research positions, where they build specialized expertise and publish their findings. In academia, advancement typically involves progressing to assistant, associate, and full professor roles, with additional opportunities to lead research groups or departments. In industry, PhD holders can move into senior scientist, project manager, or R&D director roles, with the potential to transition into leadership, policy, or consulting positions. Building a strong professional network, publishing impactful research, and developing leadership skills are key to advancing in both sectors.

Lynker Corporation

$94K - $129K/yr

Full-time

Job description

Overview

Lynker Corporation is a leading provider of innovative solutions in weather and climate science. With a commitment to excellence and a passion for innovation, Lynker leverages cutting-edge technologies and scientific expertise to support the creation and delivery of improved operational weather forecasts. As part of our ongoing growth and expansion, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Wetlands Scientist to join our growing team.

Mapping wetlands accurately across large areas is hard, and the maps are only as trustworthy as the validation behind them. We are hiring a Senior Wetland Scientist to lead that work, combining wetland science, remote sensing, and cloud-native geospatial computing to produce defensible wetland products across regional to national extents. The role spans model development, large-area production, validation and uncertainty, and technical leadership.

You will sit close to our modeling and geospatial teams, turning wetlands science into methods that run reliably over large areas. The strongest candidates pair wetland and ecological expertise with strong geospatial and coding skills, and are comfortable moving between the underlying science, the data pipeline, and validation of the resulting maps.

Responsibilities

Duties of the Senior Wetlands Scientist will include the following:

  • Mapping at scale: produce, improve, and maintain versioned wetland maps across large regional to national extents.
  • Cloud-native geospatial: build and run mapping and modeling workflows using cloud-native geospatial tools, formats, and storage.
  • Wetland modeling: implement, adapt, and improve existing and new models for wetland potential and for wetland boundary and extent.
  • Data integration: integrate LiDAR-derived elevation, hydrology, imagery, soils, and existing wetland inventories into reproducible modeling pipelines.
  • Validation & QA: design validation against reference data, quantify uncertainty, and quality-control wetland maps for accuracy and consistency.
  • Communication: document methods and results, contribute to reports and proposals, and partner with the Platform, Modeling, and Applications teams that scale and serve your products.
Qualifications

The Senior Wetlands Scientist selected should have the following:

  • Master's or PhD in wetland science, ecology, geography, environmental or earth science, hydrology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Roughly 5+ years of relevant experience, or a PhD plus a few years of relevant work.
  • Demonstrated experience mapping wetlands, land cover, or comparable features at large spatial scale.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-native geospatial tooling, formats, and workflows.
  • Experience implementing or adapting geospatial or ecological models (wetland potential, habitat, boundary and extent, or comparable).
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R for geospatial analysis, with sound coding and reproducibility practices.

The Ideal Senior Wetlands Scientist will have the following:

  • Experience with wetland potential or probability modeling and with wetland delineation, boundary, and extent methods.
  • Experience applying machine learning to land-cover or wetland classification.
  • Familiarity with national wetland, hydrography, soils, and elevation datasets, and with remote-sensing inputs.
  • Experience with distributed or parallel processing for large-area geospatial work (e.g., cloud batch, Dask, or Google Earth Engine).
  • A record of scientific publication or successful proposal work.
  • Colorado Front Range presence for periodic in-person collaboration.
