The Humanities Council is the academic home for more than 30 visiting faculty, researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and lecturers. Offering innovation grants, visiting fellowships, public lectures, and research professorships, the council also oversees several interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs, including the PhD Program in Interdisciplinary Humanities and the Program in Journalism. A connecting force across 46 humanities-related departments, centers, programs, and committees, the council hosts many events each year and enrolls more than 100 students in its minor degree programs, many of which include international and experiential teaching. In Fall 2027, the council will merge with the Princeton Humanities Initiative in preparation for the creation of a new humanities institute, which will support innovative and experimental approaches to interdisciplinary humanities research, teaching, and civic engagement.
The Humanities Council's operations are centered in Joseph Henry House, with secondary offices in Scheide Caldwell House and Green Hall.
Under the supervision of the council chair and the assistant director, the program manager will be responsible for a subset of the council's programs including the council's visiting fellows, professorship, and grant programs, as well as managing executive committee materials and agendas, overseeing signature council events and event series, and supporting core council office operations. The manager is responsible for day-to-day operations of the council's core programs and supports the council chair, the council's assistant director, and select faculty directors with implementation of activities. The program manager ensures that faculty, students, and staff have the necessary assistance to carry out their academic, research, and administrative duties.
The Humanities Council is a collaborative team and the program manager will assist with shared projects and initiatives. The program manager will work closely with the executive director of the Humanities Initiative, assistant director of the council, and other council colleagues to facilitate the council's merger with the Humanities Initiative in Fall 2027.
ResponsibilitiesAcademic Management support faculty directors, program faculty, and executive committees in the maintenance and development of programs, including high-profile and outward-facing events, visitors, and new initiatives, including new joint ventures between the Humanities Council and Humanities Initiative in coordination with the assistant director, prepare appointment forms and offer letters; onboard new instructors and visiting faculty ensure compliance with university and external regulations meet university and department academic deadlinesFinancial Management under the direction of the council's assistant director, manage several discrete program and initiative budgets, including short- and long-term financial commitments track and report expenses, preparing mid-year and year-end budget reviews, and forecasting for future academic years maintain timely and accurate records and manage expenses in accordance with fund restrictions and department and university policiesAdministrative and Project Management prepare materials for committee agendas, including ballots, web submission portals manage the application, review, decision, and reporting processes for $1M in grants and co-sponsorships track and archive visiting fellow nominations, applications, letters of endorsement, and other correspondence; assemble materials for appointment dossiers provide support as needed for routine functions of the council central office, supporting leadership and staff in Joseph Henry House and Green Hall participate in staff meetings and communicate effectively with supervisors, peers, and administrative staff
Events Management manage logistics for large events, workshops, faculty working groups, committee meetings, and information sessions work with faculty, guests, students, administrators, catering, facilities, conference services, and communications collaborate with the council's communications manager and other program managers on scheduling to manage staff capacity and avoid audience conflicts
Communications Management work closely with the council's communications manager to ensure timely communications regarding program offerings, visiting fellows, activities, events, and deadlines support the communications manager in the development of website content, manage website content and develop printed materials, newsletters, posters, announcements, invitations, and social media
QualificationsEssential Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent
Minimum five years' experience with managing projects in an academic or related environment Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, university departments, and external agencies Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills and a high level of professionalism and discretion Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), Google Forms and related programs, and experience with websites or publications Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a shared office environment Capable of meeting deadlines and maintaining complete and accurate financial records, calendars, and appointment schedules Able to prioritize work in a fast-paced environment, taking direction from multiple supervisors Flexibility in an environment of innovation and new initiatives Attention to detail in academic, operations, and financial management Excellent judgment and the ability to handle confidential information are necessary Ability to work occasional evenings. Position may occasionally require a flextime schedule to cover events.
Preferred Qualifications:
Academic work experience and/or academic training in the arts and humanities Familiarity with Princeton University systems including PeopleSoft, Prime Financials, Concur, SAFE, Canvas, Drupal, or experience working comfortably in comparable systems
