Job description

Assistant Professor - Peripheral Nerve PhD Scientist (Tenure or Research track)

The University of Utah Department of Neurosurgery seeks to hire a PhD Research Scientist for a tenure‑track or research‑track appointment focused on peripheral nerve research. The successful candidate will lead an independent laboratory in close collaboration with a clinician‑scientist to translate basic science findings into clinical applications. The laboratory receives NIH, SBIR and university funding.

Responsibilities
  • Co‑develop scientific research projects and serve as a lead scientist.
  • Review and stay current with project‑related scientific literature.
  • Set up new methods or assays to achieve scientific objectives.
  • Identify and implement creative solutions to overcome experimental problems.
  • Organize, interpret data, and derive study conclusions.
  • Manage and train research staff to achieve research goals.
  • Collaborate with internal and external investigators on multiple projects, ensuring scientific significance and feasibility.
  • Summarize results of clinical studies in scientific abstracts and manuscripts.
  • Provide clinical and scientific information to support various initiatives.
  • Contribute to teaching activities by preparing and presenting educational seminars.
  • Assist with grant proposal preparation, including background, significance, and planning statistics, and coordinate with research administrators to meet deadlines.
  • Attend national conferences and present research findings.
Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree in biology, neuroscience, immunology, bioengineering, or a related scientific discipline plus at least four years of post‑doctoral experience or equivalence.
  • Demonstrated human relationships and effective communication skills.
  • Experience with flow cytometry, immunohistology, animal breeding (especially transgenic animal maintenance), neurophysiology, and behavioral testing.
  • Strong preference for candidates holding a PhD in immunology or peripheral nerve disorders.
  • Potential ability to perform essential functions of the job, as outlined in the position description.
Work Environment

Laboratory and office settings, with continuous duty requirements for data analysis and experimental oversight. Physical requirements include sitting, hearing, listening, and talking continuously; occasional repetitive hand motion, walking, and occasional bending and reaching overhead.
