Position Highlights
The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix invites applications for three tenure-track faculty positions in the Department of Biomedical Informatics, broadly defined. Areas of emphasis include, but are not limited to, computational medicine, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in healthcare and medicine, clinical informatics, digital health innovation, biomedical data science and data-driven implementation science, particularly as applied to complex diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and other chronic health conditions.
These positions are part of a coordinated cluster hire to expand the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the U of A College of Medicine - Phoenix. We welcome outstanding applicants at all career stages who demonstrate excellence in team science research, education and relevant interdisciplinary collaboration. Appointment rank will be commensurate with experience and expertise. These hires are supported by the long-term strategic vision of the College and are aligned with the University's priority to strengthen data science-driven innovations in healthcare, discovery science and precision medicine across the state.
The Department of Biomedical Informatics aims to provide leadership in the development, evaluation and application of computational and data-driven approaches to improve healthcare quality, safety, efficiency and outcomes, including applications addressing major public health and biomedical challenges such as diabetes, cancer, and other chronic health conditions. The Department integrates expertise across clinical informatics, AI/ML, human-centered design and global data science to address emerging challenges and accelerate discovery in biomedical science and healthcare.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Have demonstrated ability to design, develop and apply state-of-the-art Data Science, ML and/or AI methodologies to biomedical text data, imaging data, omics data and other relevant healthcare data.
  • Experience collaborating with biomedical research programs, clinical partners or health care systems.
  • Evidence of strong interdisciplinary communication skills and ability to work in multi-stakeholder environments.
  • Develop and sustain an independent, externally funded research program, with a strong publication record and clear trajectory toward national impact.
  • Have demonstrated experience with real-world clinical data modalities (e.g., EHR, imaging, wearables/remote monitoring, clinical text) and rigorous evaluation/validation practices supporting translation to clinical workflows, population health, and disease-specific applications.
  • Experience designing multimodal and longitudinal models (e.g., sequential prediction, multimodal fusion, graph-based learning) for diagnostic/prognostic applications.
  • Teaching service expectations:
    • Teach graduate program or undergraduate courses in biomedical informatics / data science / AI and participate in curriculum development.
    • Participate in departmental, college and professional services (committees, peer review, editorial/reviewer activities).
  • Candidatespursuing senior appointments should additionally demonstrate:
    • Have a record of successful independent program development and leadership.
    • National distinction in research, teaching or patient care, within an academic environment.
    • Evidence of mentorship of junior faculty and trainees; or has served as a joint mentor on interdisciplinary teams.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Hold a PhD in computer science, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, biotechnology, health/medical informatics or a related biomedical field; or hold an MD or equivalent with training in biomedical informatics (e.g., MS in Biomedical Informatics, Clinical Informatics Board Certification). Degrees should be from an accredited institution.
  • Possess a track record of successful extramural funding (e.g., NIH, NSF, DoD), or clear potential for such funding for early-career applicants.
  • If an MD, be eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Arizona and for medical staff appointment at Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Show evidence of national distinction through participation in NIH, NSF or VA study sections, review panels or leadership roles in relevant organizations, societies, or other national service (e.g., ACM, ISMB, IEEE, AMIA).
  • Demonstrate evidence of clinical translation or deployment-oriented work, such as prospective evaluation, workflow integration or development of clinical decision support applications.
  • Have experience leading or contributing to training programs (e.g., NIH training grants, structured mentorship programs) and developing interdisciplinary training curricula.
  • Have experience contributing to emerging data governance, ethics or AI regulatory frameworks.
  • Demonstrate effort in translating research into real-world clinical or public health impact.
  • Experience applying biomedical informatics, AI/ML, or data science approaches to critical clinical or public health domains such as diabetes, cancer, or population health.
