Job description

Ready to build a career that takes you beyond the office and into the field-where every survey, site, and artifact contributes to protecting cultural heritage? ERM is seeking an entrylevel Archaeologist who is eager to learn, travel, and grow alongside experienced professionals on meaningful projects across the United States, with a focus on the MidAtlantic.

Why This Role Matters

Cultural resources shape the stories communities carry forward. In this role, you'll help identify, document, and protect archaeological resources while supporting responsible development. Your work will directly inform compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and contribute to thoughtful decisionmaking that balances progress and preservation.

What Your Impact Is

Working closely with experienced Archaeologists, you'll support Phase I, II, and III archaeological investigations-both in the field and in the office. You'll help evaluate sites for National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility, assess project impacts under Section 106, and contribute to highquality technical documentation that stands up to regulatory review. With up to 70% or more of your time spent in the field during peak seasons, you'll gain handson experience that accelerates professional growth.

What You'll Bring

Required

  • B.A. or B.S. in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field

  • Completion of an accredited archaeological field school

  • 1-5 years of experience with Phase I, II, and/or III archaeological fieldwork

  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs and work outdoors in variable weather and terrain

  • Willingness to travel frequently and work weekends or extended hours as project needs require

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow direction while working independently

  • Demonstrated technical writing skills

  • Ability to comply with Health & Safety requirements, including periodic drug and alcohol testing

  • This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship

Preferred

  • M.A. or M.S. in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field

  • Experience as a crew chief or field director

  • Qualifications meeting the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Standards for Archaeology

  • Familiarity with prehistoric and historic artifact assemblages

  • Experience completing SHPO site forms and related data entry

  • GIS, graphics, database, or digital photography experience

  • Knowledge of cultural resources standards and guidelines in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Washington, DC

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct archaeological surveys and site investigations

  • Perform Phase I pedestrian surveys and support Phase II and III fieldwork as needed

  • Walk long distances in challenging environmental and weather conditions

  • Document archaeological resources and prepare sections of technical cultural resources reports

  • Complete statespecific site forms and supporting documentation

  • Participate in project planning, logistics, and scheduling

  • Comply with ERM health, safety, and quality standards

  • Support additional project needs as assigned

For the Consulting Associate, Archaeologist position, the anticipated annual base pay is $62,732-$76,259 (USD). Actual pay will depend on factors such as education, experience, skills, location, performance, and business needs. In some cases, pay may fall outside this range. This role may be eligible for bonus pay (casual and fixed term/flex force employees are not bonus eligible).

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, parental leave, medical, dental, vision, life, disability, AD&D insurance, 401(k) or RRSP/DPSP, and other applicable benefits to eligible employees.
