Pharmacy projects are usually carried out by pharmacists, pharmacy students, or healthcare teams and may take place in hospitals, community pharmacies, or academic settings. The goal is to address specific challenges or opportunities in pharmacy practice and contribute to better health outcomes. Job description

Job Title: Pharmacy Technician IntakeJob Description

This role focuses on accurately creating and maintaining patient and provider profiles, verifying prescription information, and supporting a high-volume specialty pharmacy intake process. You will review referrals, perform initial clinical checks of prescriptions, and communicate with providers to ensure all information is complete and accurate before prescriptions move to downstream teams. The position requires strong attention to detail, sound judgment in moderately complex situations, and the ability to work efficiently in a structured call center and office environment with no direct in-person patient contact.

Responsibilities

  • Work on moderately complex intake assignments where sound judgment is required to resolve issues and make routine recommendations.

  • Review referral contents to confirm that all required information is complete, accurate, and suitable for processing.

  • Create accurate patient profiles from scanned or faxed images by entering correct patient and provider information into the system.

  • Perform an initial check of prescriptions to ensure clinical accuracy and readiness for processing by other pharmacy teams.

  • Communicate with providers by phone regarding referral status, prescription clarifications, missing information, and patient concerns to ensure all necessary details are obtained.

  • Update clear and concise progress notes so that other roles within the workflow can quickly assess the status of each referral.

  • Enter new provider information, including National Provider Identifier (NPI), accurately into the system to support reporting and analytics.

  • Handle high-volume data entry for pharmacy and referral information while maintaining accuracy and speed.

  • Work effectively in a call center environment, managing inbound and outbound calls related to referrals and prescription intake.

  • Collaborate with colleagues and other departments to ensure a smooth and efficient intake process for patients and providers.

  • Adapt to changes in processes, schedules, or priorities as needed to support business and patient needs.

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the pharmacy intake and verification operations.

Essential Skills

  • Current CPhT Certified Pharmacy Technician certification in good standing, with no restrictions.

  • Current registration as a pharmacy technician with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy (NCBOP).

  • Prior experience working in a pharmacy setting is required.

  • 2+ years of pharmacy operations or pharmacy experience preferred.

  • Experience in a call center or high-volume phone environment.

  • Strong data entry skills with a focus on accuracy and efficiency.

  • Competence in basic computer skills and comfort working with electronic systems and scanned or faxed documents.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong attention to detail and a conscientious approach to work.

  • Ability to effectively work with people and communicate clearly and professionally with providers and colleagues.

  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing processes, schedules, and priorities.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Healthcare experience, particularly in a specialty pharmacy environment, is preferred.

  • Experience with verification or reverification projects is beneficial.

  • Familiarity with specialty medications and complex referral workflows is a plus.

  • Comfort interpreting and handling scanned and faxed prescription and referral documents.

  • Ability to document concise and informative progress notes for use by cross-functional teams.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to use judgment in moderately complex situations.

  • Customer service mindset with a focus on supporting patients and providers through accurate and timely intake processing.

Work Environment

This position is based in a large, rapidly growing specialty pharmacy setting with a structured call center and office environment. You will work Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, with no weekend shifts and closure on major holidays. During the reverification period, the role is on-site Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. After the reverification project, the schedule transitions to an 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. shift, followed by a hybrid work model with approximately two days on-site and three days working from home. All patient and provider interactions occur over the phone; there is no direct in-person patient contact. The environment is professional and office-based, with a focus on phone communication, computer work, and data entry. The culture emphasizes simplifying access to medications and delivering personalized care to help patients achieve the best possible outcomes, while offering a stable weekday schedule and a hybrid work arrangement once training and initial project phases are complete.
