Processing Technician

Summary
The Processing Technician is responsible for accurately entering, processing, and routing prescriptions within the pharmacy system in accordance with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and the direction of supervising pharmacists. This role supports efficient pharmacy operations by ensuring prescription accuracy, resolving processing issues, and maintaining high standards of documentation, communication, and workflow management. The Processing Technician works closely with pharmacists, technicians, and other operational teams to ensure timely and accurate patient care.

Education amp; Experience Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be licensed (unrestricted) and registered as a Pharmacy Technician or be willing to apply for a temporary registration as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee in the state of employment.
  • Minimum one (1) year of pharmacy technician experience.
  • Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Detail‑oriented with the ability to multitask effectively.
  • Efficient, self‑motivated, and proactive.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, and Access.

Essential Functions amp; Responsibilities
  • Prescription Processing amp; Data Entry
  • Consult with pharmacists regarding questions or clarifications related to prescription entry.
  • Enter and process new prescriptions into the pharmacy computer system, where permitted, by regulation and only under the direction of a supervising pharmacist.
  • Verify prescription information prior to processing to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Efficiently and accurately process mailed‑in, faxed, electronically received, verbal orders, and dropped‑off prescriptions.
  • Route labels, rejections, and processing issues appropriately; perform rebills and balance billing as required.
  • Maintain general knowledge of common medications, usage, and brand-name to generic name.

Quality, Accuracy amp; Compliance
  • Implement and adhere to internal policies and procedures, including DUR, polypharmacy protocols, allergy alerts, and drug interaction policies.
  • Understand and resolve adjudication issues in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of brand medications and their generic equivalents.
  • Review patient profiles for medication changes, duplications, or additions, and document received prescriptions per policy.
  • Forward denials, errors, and exceptions to the appropriate department or personnel.

Operational Support
  • Maintain workflow efficiency by supporting pharmacists and other team members as needed.
  • Uphold accuracy, timeliness, and compliance standards across all processing activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions / Behavioral Expectations
  • Ability to use computers, designated software, MS Office applications, printers, calculators, fax machines, and other pharmacy equipment.
  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, and reach frequently throughout the workday.
  • Ability to manage high work volume during peak periods.

  • Ability to lift and carry light to moderate items, with occasional stooping or crouching.
