Job Summary
Xavier University of Louisiana is accepting applications for a Research Assistant in the division of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy. The ideal candidate will have a BS or greater in the biological or related sciences and will be experienced in bacterial cell culture and the care and routine maintenance of common laboratory equipment. The candidate should have acceptable communication skills and be able to work with and supervise undergraduate and pharmacy, professional students.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in biology, chemistry, or related scientific field. Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications
Preferred Qualifications
Bacterial and/or archaeal cell culture experience.
Special Requirements Summary
The capability of occasionally handling relatively heavy items that may weigh up to 50 pounds

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Description
1. Work punctually, neatly, and reliably in the laboratory on a semi-independent or independent basis
2. Maintain lab environment including daily and weekly lab maintenance and cleaning as required.
3. Maintain bacterial and archaeal cell cultures for spectroscopic and other needs.
4. Attend and report at the lab and/or meetings with the lab supervisor.
5. Perform experiments requiring skill in accurately manipulating small quantities of liquids and solids (pipetting, weighing, etc.);
6. Oversee and supervise undergraduate and professional pharmacy students after suitable training and orientation.
7. Operate scientific equipment (balances, pH meters, cell counters, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, etc.) in a responsible fashion after a brief period of training/orientation.
8. Assure adherence to lab safety procedures by students or other researchers.
9. Report all activities in the lab notebook and electronic reporting system as directed.
10. Maintain inventory of core lab supplies and obtain quotes for supply orders that are needed.
11. Write or update lab protocols and methods for manuscripts as needed.
12. Perform data analysis after appropriate training or orientation.
13. Comply with all division, college, and university rules and guidelines as detailed in the staff handbook
