To thrive as a PGY-1 resident, you need a solid medical knowledge base, clinical reasoning, and successful completion of medical school with a valid MD or DO degree. Mastery of these skills ensures safe patient care, efficient workflow, and a successful transition from student to practicing physician.

What are PGY-1s?

PGY-1 stands for Post-Graduate Year 1 and refers to the first year of residency training after graduating from medical school. PGY-1s are also known as interns and are physicians who have obtained their medical degree but are in their initial year of hands-on clinical training in a hospital or healthcare facility. During this year, they rotate through various medical specialties, learn essential clinical skills, and gain practical experience under supervision. The PGY-1 year is crucial for developing the foundation necessary for further specialized training in their chosen field.
