Personal Lines Associate Underwriter information

What is a personal lines associate underwriter?

A Personal Lines Associate Underwriter is an insurance professional who evaluates applications for personal insurance products, such as auto, homeowners, or renters policies. They assess risk factors, review policy applications, and determine eligibility for coverage according to company guidelines. Typically, they work under the supervision of more senior underwriters and help ensure that policies are priced accurately and fairly based on risk. Their role is crucial in maintaining the profitability and integrity of the insurance portfolio while providing quality service to applicants and brokers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a personal lines associate underwriter?

To thrive as a Personal Lines Associate Underwriter, you need a solid understanding of insurance principles, risk assessment, and policy evaluation, generally supported by a bachelor's degree or relevant insurance coursework. Familiarity with underwriting software, rating systems, and sometimes certifications like AINS or CPCU is common in this role. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help you effectively evaluate risks and collaborate with agents or clients. These skills are crucial to ensure accurate policy decisions, maintain profitability, and deliver excellent customer service in a competitive insurance market.

What are some common challenges faced by personal lines associate underwriters, and how can they be addressed?

Personal Lines Associate Underwriters often face the challenge of balancing risk assessment with providing competitive quotes in a fast-paced environment. They must review detailed information about clients and policies, which requires strong attention to detail and the ability to interpret underwriting guidelines accurately. Collaboration with agents and senior underwriters is key to resolving complex cases or clarifying coverage options. To address these challenges, staying organized, seeking feedback from team members, and utilizing available underwriting tools and resources can help improve decision-making and workflow efficiency.

Job description

Antilles Insurance Company is a leading property and casualty insurer headquartered in Puerto Rico, regulated by the Oficina del Comisionado de Seguros (OCS). We serve both personal and commercial lines clients across the island, combining deep local expertise with a commitment to operational excellence and innovation.

Position Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Personal Lines Underwriter to join our underwriting team. This role is responsible for evaluating, pricing, and binding personal lines risks — primarily Personal Package Policies, HO6 and related endorsements — in compliance with company guidelines, OCS regulations, and sound underwriting principles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and underwrite new business submissions and renewals for personal lines accounts including personal package and HO6.
  • Analyze risk characteristics, property values, TIV, construction type, occupancy, and loss history to determine acceptability and pricing
  • Communicate underwriting decisions to brokers and agents in a timely and professional manner
  • Ensure compliance with OCS-mandated forms, rates, and filing requirements for personal lines products
  • Process policy endorsements, cancellations, and reinstatements accurately within system workflows
  • Collaborate with the production team to support broker relationships and agency pipeline development
  • Participate in workflow automation initiatives and contribute to process improvement efforts
  • Prepare reports and metrics for management review, including loss ratios, submission counts, and bind rates
  • Assist in the review and update of underwriting guidelines, SOPs, and authority matrices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Risk Management, or a related field
  • Minimum 2–4 years of personal lines underwriting experience in a P&C insurance environment
  • Working knowledge of Puerto Rico OCS regulatory framework preferred
  • Familiarity with personal lines policy forms (ISO HO3, HO6, DP forms) and coverage interpretation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with policy administration systems a plus
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and sound judgment in risk evaluation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Spanish and English
  • CPCU, CIC, or similar insurance designation is a plus but not required

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits
  • Professional development and continuing education support
  • Collaborative team environment with exposure to both personal and commercial lines operations
  • Opportunity to contribute to a growing company undergoing exciting operational modernization
