What is a personal injury attorney?

A Personal Injury Attorney is a lawyer who provides legal representation to individuals who have been injured physically or psychologically as a result of the negligence or wrongdoing of another person, company, government agency, or other entity. They help clients pursue compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages resulting from incidents such as car accidents, slip and falls, or workplace injuries. Personal Injury Attorneys guide clients through the legal process, negotiate with insurance companies, and, if necessary, represent them in court to secure a fair settlement or verdict.

What is a personal injury attorney?

Personal injury attorneys specialize in laws that deal with injury or death caused by another person’s neglect or malice. In this career, you represent your your clients in personal injury cases, such as car accidents or medical malpractice. Your responsibilities include collecting evidence, assessing the damage, and working to get a fair settlement for your client. Private practices and large firms have positions for personal injury attorneys.

What are some common challenges personal injury attorneys face when managing multiple cases simultaneously?

Personal Injury Attorneys often juggle numerous cases at various stages, which can make time management and organization critical challenges. Each case involves coordinating with clients, medical providers, insurance companies, and sometimes opposing counsel, requiring strong communication and multitasking skills. Staying on top of deadlines, court dates, and documentation is essential to prevent errors and ensure the best outcomes for clients. Effective use of case management software and collaboration with paralegals and support staff can help alleviate these pressures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a personal injury attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Personal Injury Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, state bar admission, and expertise in tort law, legal research, and case preparation. Familiarity with legal research databases (such as Westlaw or LexisNexis), case management software, and e-discovery tools is essential. Outstanding negotiation, empathy, and communication skills help in building client trust and securing favorable settlements. These competencies are crucial for effectively representing clients, managing complex cases, and achieving successful outcomes in a competitive legal environment.

Job description

Description
Associate Attorney - Plaintiff Personal Injury & Workers' Compensation
Kisner Law, LLC | Hyattsville, MD
$125,000-$180,000+ Bonus | Based on experience, litigation background, and results
Prior Plaintiff Personal Injury and/or Insurance Defense experience is required for this role.
You already know what PI work looks like.
What matters now is where you do it.
At Kisner Law, we are building a plaintiff-side law firm designed for people who are good at what they do and want an environment that actually supports that.
We are not trying to be the biggest volume mill in the region. We are focused on building a strong, modern, systems-driven firm where talented people can grow, contribute, and genuinely enjoy working together.
Why Attorneys Want to Work Here
Because culture matters - especially in PI.
We know experienced attorneys have options, so we focus heavily on creating an environment where people can actually thrive long-term.
At Kisner Law, you'll find:
  • Leadership that is accessible, collaborative, and invested in the team
  • Support staff and systems designed to help cases move efficiently
  • A growing firm where strong performers have real opportunities for advancement
  • Less bureaucracy and more ownership
  • A team that values professionalism without the "stiff law firm" atmosphere
  • High standards balanced with mutual respect and support
  • A workplace where ideas are welcomed, and initiative is appreciated

We are intentional about building infrastructure, workflows, and culture before growth becomes chaos.
You'll Probably Like It Here If:
  • You enjoy plaintiff-side advocacy and negotiation
  • You like autonomy but still value teamwork
  • You care about client experience, not just file volume
  • You appreciate organized systems and operational efficiency
  • You enjoy helping shape and improve processes
  • You want to work somewhere that feels ambitious but sustainable

The Role
You'll manage personal injury and workers' compensation matters from intake through resolution, including litigation support, negotiations, strategy, and client advocacy.
You know the work already. What matters to us is finding someone who is proactive, organized, collaborative, and genuinely invested in delivering strong outcomes for clients.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive salary + Bonus ($125,000 - $180,000 + depending on experience)
  • Health & dental insurance
  • Paid time off
  • 401(k)
  • Long-term growth opportunities within a scaling firm

Required Cover Letter
To apply, please submit a cover letter detailing:
  • A major professional accomplishment or win you are proud of
  • Why you are interested in Kisner Law specifically
  • What type of work environment helps you perform at your best

We are looking for someone who wants to grow with the firm long-term and help build something exceptional.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
• Manage assigned cases from intake through settlement or litigation resolution
• Maintain responsibility for case progression, calendaring, scheduling, deadlines, and follow-up tasks
• Draft pleadings, motions, discovery responses, settlement demands, correspondence, and other legal documents
• Conduct legal research and analyze case-specific legal and factual issues
• Prepare for and participate in depositions, discovery, statements, negotiations, and other litigation-related activities
• Communicate regularly with clients, insurance adjusters, opposing counsel, medical providers, and other parties
Qualifications
• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
• Licensed and in good standing with the Maryland Bar (DC Bar admission is a plus)
• Prior experience in personal injury, workers' compensation, litigation, family law, or another client-facing practice area preferred
• Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and organizational skills
• Experience managing deadlines, court calendars, and active caseloads
