Personal Care Assistant
Prefer a candidate who will obtain a CDL to drive a school bus.
Reports To: Principal and EC Program Coordinator/EC Teacher
Department: Exceptional Children Services
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Employment Status: Full-Time, 10-Month, Hourly Position with Benefits
Salary: According to the Burke County Public Schools Classified Salary Schedule
Qualifications

  • Minimum of 48 semester hours of creditable college coursework from an accredited college or university (or meet current state requirements).
  • Associate degree preferred.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities preferred.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, parents, and community agencies.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver License (CDL) with appropriate school bus endorsement to transport students as assigned.
Position Summary
Provides instructional, behavioral, vocational, and personal support to students with disabilities participating in North Carolina's Occupational Course of Study (OCS), helping students achieve academic, employment, independent living, and transition goals.
Instructional Support
  • Assist with the implementation of IEPs.
  • Provide one-on-one and small-group instruction.
  • Modify instructional materials under teacher direction.
Vocational Training
  • Support community-based vocational instruction and work experiences.
  • Assist students with job readiness skills.
  • Monitor students during job-site placements.
  • Transport students as assigned in accordance with BCPS policies after obtaining the required CDL and school bus certification.
Transition Services
  • Support instruction in independent living, self-advocacy, money management, and community access.
Behavioral Support
  • Implement behavior intervention plans and positive behavior supports.
Student Care
  • Assist with mobility, personal care, and health plans as required.
Data Collection
  • Collect IEP progress data and maintain confidential records.
Collaboration
  • Work with teachers, related service providers, employers, Vocational Rehabilitation, and families.
Classroom Management
  • Prepare materials, supervise students, and maintain classroom organization.
Terms of Employment
