Job description

Department Information This position is only open to Colorado state residents New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year. We're looking for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic who takes pride in quality repairs and dependable work.

If you have a Class A or B CDL Permit (or full CDL) your expertise will help keep Colorado's equipment safe, reliable, and ready for the road. This position requires that you currently have a valid Colorado CDL Permit and that you obtain your CDL Class A or B within 6 months of hire as a condition of continued employment. This position will require a DOT drug test as a pre-employment step.

Description of Job About the Position Join CDOT's maintenance team and help keep Colorado moving. As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic III, you'll inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain the trucks and specialized equipment that keep our highways safe year-round. From snowplows to bulldozers, your skills will help ensure our fleet is ready to respond whenever Colorado roads need it.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair light- and heavy-duty trucks, snowplows, and specialized highway maintenance equipment using diagnostic tools and computerized systems. Repair and rebuild major vehicle systems, including engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical, hydraulic, steering, suspension, fuel, and air systems. Perform preventative maintenance, routine inspections, DOT safety inspections, and equipment servicing to ensure fleet reliability and compliance.

Operate and test a variety of heavy equipment to diagnose issues, verify repairs, and support maintenance operations. Fabricate, modify, and install equipment, components, and specialized parts to meet CDOT operational needs. Order parts and materials, prepare work orders, and accurately document repairs, inspections, and maintenance activities in SAP.

Maintain a safe, organized work environment by following CDOT, DOT, and OSHA safety requirements and participating in required safety training. Stay current on new equipment, technology, repair techniques, and department procedures through ongoing training and professional development. Work Environment During May - September expected work schedule is 4 10-hour days, Mon-Thu 6:30 a.m

to 4:00 p.m. During October - April expected work schedule is 5 8-hour days, Mon-Fri 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Approximately 40% of the time is spent in the field and 60% spent in the equipment shop

Required to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays. Some on-call time is required. Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where he/she can be reached for the purpose of responding to an emergency.

Required to lift up to 70 lbs. Required to bend, kneel, climb in/out of trucks when maintaining and repairing equipment. Required to operate CDOT vehicles.

May be required to travel to remote locations for equipment repair. Must be able to read, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions. Frequent travel during work day to perform field repairs, including to remote locations, as well as to attend trainings and meetings.

Must be willing and be physically able to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold), variable weather conditions, and at varying elevations up to 12,000 feet for long periods of time. Exposure to loud noises. Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc.

Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties. Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights Minimum Qualifications Experience Only: Four years of progressively responsible experience in automotive AND heavy equipment repair, that includes at least ONE year of experience with diagnosis and repair of heavy diesel equipment such as 10-ton double axle snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines and/or 15' mower tractors, with current proficiency at the journey level. OR Education and Experience: A combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to four (4) years.

Satisfactory completion of a formalized apprenticeship program, or higher level non-correspondence coursework from an accredited college or technical school, beyond high school, in automotive and diesel equipment mechanics or heavy equipment mechanics will be considered on a year for year basis. Unofficial transcripts or a copy of your certificate of completion are required if using education towards qualifications. Experience in automotive AND heavy equipment repair will be considered and must include at least ONE year of experience with diagnosis and repair of heavy diesel equipment such as 10-ton double axle snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines and/or 15' mower tractors, with current proficiency at the journey level.

College Transcripts: If you are using education to qualify, a legible copy of your official or unofficial college transcript(s) or an official foreign credential evaluation report must be submitted with your application. Transcripts must show the name of the school, completed credit hours, and (if applicable) that a degree was conferred. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must have been assessed for U.S

equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service. The credential evaluation report must be an official report. Conditions of Employment Must possess a current, valid Colorado CDL Permit. Must obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes within 6 months of hire as a condition of continued employment. Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks.

Essential Services Designation - Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.

New employees are required to attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora, while veteran CDOT employees are required to attend training one week out of each year in Aurora. Preferred Qualifications The exceptional applicant possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following: Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section. Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position.

Highest work/personal ethics and integrity. Commercial Driver's License Class A with no restrictions on air brakes. Extensive experience with troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of automotive and heavy-duty diesel vehicles and equipment.

Experience with equipment up to 10 tons is highly desirable. Experience designing and fabricating parts and special tools needed for unique and emergency situations. Medium/Heavy truck ASE Certifications in Diesel Engine, Drive Trains, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating, Ventilation, and A/C is preferred.

Effective interpersonal and customer service skills. Self-starter and motivated to accomplish assigned tasks. Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations.

Strong attention to technical detail and accuracy. Strong commitment to safety. Must have knowledge and know-how to use computers for vehicle diagnosing, data input, record keeping and email, and have the ability to quickly learn other software.
