Job description

Your Future Team

Hightower Bethesda Wealth Management is a fiduciary fee-only practice in Bethesda, Maryland. Our comprehensive approach covers the full spectrum of wealth management, including investing, financial planning, and tax mitigation. We employ a holistic, data-driven, and inclusive approach.

Our collaborative, entrepreneurial culture gives professionals the opportunity to make a meaningful impact. You'll work alongside experienced wealth advisors, help shape our tax planning function, influence client outcomes, and enjoy significant opportunities for professional growth in a rapidly expanding practice.

The Role
We are seeking a Senior Tax Planning Consultant to become our practice’s internal tax professional. This is not a tax preparation position. Instead, you will partner with our advisors to identify sophisticated tax planning opportunities, help solve complex client situations, and collaborate with clients' CPAs and attorneys to deliver coordinated advice.

You enjoy solving difficult tax problems, researching complex issues, and translating technical tax concepts into actionable recommendations. You thrive in a collaborative environment and enjoy helping advisors and clients make informed decisions. You will report to the COO.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the practice’s primary internal tax resource for advisors and staff
  • Analyze individual, business, trust, and related tax returns to identify planning opportunities (not tax preparation)
  • Develop proactive tax strategies aligned with clients' overall financial plans and investment strategies
  • Partner with advisors before and during client meetings to explain tax strategies in clear, practical language
  • Coordinate with clients, CPAs, attorneys, and other professionals to implement planning recommendations
  • Research complex federal and state tax issues and communicate legislative changes to the advisory team
  • Prepare quarterly and annual tax projections, estimated tax analyses, and payroll-related calculations when needed
  • Create scalable tax planning processes, templates, and educational resources
  • Develop presentations and internal training to improve advisor tax knowledge
  • Help build and continuously improve our tax planning capabilities

Examples of Planning Topics

  • Roth conversion analysis
  • Capital gain planning
  • Charitable giving and donor-advised funds
  • Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)
  • Business entity planning
  • Retirement distribution strategies
  • Equity compensation (RSUs and stock options)
  • Estate and trust tax coordination
  • Tax-efficient portfolio withdrawal

What You’ll Bring

  • BA/BS in Accounting required
  • CPA strongly preferred (EA considered)
  • 5 years of tax experience, preferably reviewing individual and closely held business returns
  • Experience with high-net-worth tax planning strongly preferred
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to build relationships with advisors, clients, and outside professionals
  • Self-starter with excellent organizational and project management skills

What Success Looks Like

  • Become the trusted tax resource for advisors
  • Help uncover meaningful tax savings for clients
  • Deliver exceptional client experiences
  • Build efficient, repeatable tax planning processes
  • Strengthen our reputation for sophisticated planning

What We Offer

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance beginning on day one
  • 401(k) with employer contributions
  • Flexible spending and health savings account options
  • Generous PTO and flexible work environment
  • Professional development and long-term career advancement
  • Annual base salary range of $80,000–$150,000 plus bonus opportunity, based on qualifications and experience

You are a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or have other unrestricted U.S. work authorization and will not require sponsorship for U.S. work authorization now or anytime in the future.
