Job description

Job Title: Utility / OperatorJob Description

The Utility / Operator supports the Melt and Forge Shops by safely moving materials, assisting multiple departments, and performing basic production tasks in a large specialty steel facility. This role operates overhead cranes and forklifts, takes accurate measurements for steel cutting, and helps ensure a clean, organized, and safe work environment while working both indoors and outdoors on a rotating 12-hour shift schedule.

Responsibilities
  • Support the Melt and Forge Shops by performing a variety of utility and production tasks as assigned.
  • Utilize overhead cranes and forklifts to safely move steel and other materials throughout the facility.
  • Gather steel products from the yard and transport them to designated stations for finishing and other processing departments.
  • Take accurate measurements using a tape measure to determine appropriate steel cuts and verify material dimensions.
  • Operate general production and machine equipment as needed to support workflow.
  • Use hand tools and related equipment safely and correctly during daily tasks.
  • Assist various departments and areas across the facility based on operational needs and production priorities.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all times, following all safety policies and procedures.

Essential Skills
  • Ability to operate or learn to operate overhead cranes safely in a production environment.

Work Environment

This role is based in a large specialty steel facility that produces various grades and forms of steel for industries such as aerospace, power generation, and oil and gas. Work is performed on 12-hour shifts following a rotating schedule of 3 days on / 3 days off, then 2 days on / 2 days off, with both day shift (7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.) and night shift (7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.) openings available. The environment involves working around heavy equipment, overhead cranes, forklifts, and industrial machinery, with tasks performed both inside the plant and outside in the yard when gathering and staging steel products. The facility operates in a union environment with defined pay tiers based on experience, and starting pay rates vary by level, with hourly increases after completion of the probationary period. Employees are expected to follow all safety procedures, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and maintain a clean, orderly work area while working collaboratively in a fast-paced, production-focused setting.

The pay range for this position is $41600.00 - $45864.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
