Job description

General Purpose

The Bus Driver is responsible to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of all students to and from school while following the assigned routes and times. The Bus Driver must be consistently on time and reliable to ensure the department is able to serve the students at all times.

Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities
  1. Operate Class B motor vehicle
  2. Attention to detail and schedules
  3. Operate conventional and transit style diesel, gasoline, and propane buses
  4. Be knowledgeable in reading route sheets, following directions, and staying on time
  5. Conduct pre and post trip inspections before and after all trips
  6. Report defects and malfunctions IAW established procedures
  7. Maintain clean bus exterior and maintain bus in condition that will pass state police inspection at all times
  8. Operate bus in accordance with established federal, state and local procedures
  9. Be knowledgeable of, and comply with, all applicable laws, ordinances, rules and procedures relative to the operation and use of school bus
  10. Must maintain safety, order and discipline aboard bus
  11. Complete required reports
  12. Operate 2-way radio in accordance with federal, local and state regulations
  13. Other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director and/or designee
Education, Experience and Qualifications
  • High School graduate/GED equivalent
  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Must have or be willing to obtain a Valid Indiana Commercial Driver's License with School Bus Certification
  • Clean driving record
  • Must pass physical examination under requirements of IC 20-9-1, and includes passing drug screening, extensive criminal background, and complete PSM in allotted time
  • If needed, complete 32 hours of training to obtain your CDL License with the driver trainer and/or any other required training
  • Attend the state sponsored 3-day safety meeting.
  • Demonstrate ability to operate all equipment on the bus
  • Read and interpret materials, such as safety rules, operating instructions and procedure manuals
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Obtain and keep current all required training
  • Successful interview with Transportation Director or designee

Salary and Benefits

By contract, employees are hired as a substitute school bus driver before being hired as a contracted school bus driver with a permanent route, pay increase, and benefits.

Payment Type: $20.05 per hour

Benefits: No benefits until placed in a permanent position
