What is a permanent building substitute?

A Permanent Building Substitute is a teacher who works full-time at a specific school, filling in for absent teachers as needed throughout the year. Unlike day-to-day substitutes, they remain at the same school and can build relationships with students and staff. Their assignments may vary daily, covering different grades or subjects depending on the school's needs. This role provides consistency for both students and the school community, and often includes some involvement in school-wide activities or professional development.

How does a permanent building substitute typically collaborate with full-time teachers and administration throughout the school year?

Permanent Building Substitutes work closely with full-time teachers and school administrators to ensure instructional continuity. They regularly communicate with teachers to understand lesson plans, classroom routines, and student needs, and often attend staff meetings or professional development sessions. Building strong relationships with both staff and students is key, as they may be called upon to step into various classrooms, sometimes with little notice. This collaboration helps substitutes quickly adapt to different teaching environments and maintain a positive learning atmosphere.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a permanent building substitute, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Permanent Building Substitute, you need a strong understanding of classroom management, instructional strategies, and a valid teaching certification or substitute permit. Familiarity with educational technology platforms, school policies, and student information systems is typically required. Flexibility, strong communication, and the ability to quickly build rapport with students and staff are standout soft skills. These abilities ensure smooth classroom operations, continuity of instruction, and a positive learning environment across various grade levels and subjects.

What is the difference between Permanent Building Substitute vs Long-Term Substitute Teacher?

AspectPermanent Building SubstituteLong-Term Substitute Teacher

While both roles involve substituting for teachers, a Permanent Building Substitute typically covers multiple classes within a school without a fixed classroom, often with a substitute permit. Both roles are essential for maintaining classroom continuity but differ mainly in duration and certification requirements.

Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.
As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will help define Blue Origin's Human Landing System (HLS) - the lander that will carry astronauts to the surface of the Moon and return them safely to Orion. On the System Definition & Certification team you work across requirements, system safety, verification & validation, and certification - the instruments we use to prove the vehicle is safe to fly crew. You will own requirements, safety, and verification for a complex, cross-cutting area of the system with minimal oversight, and set the technical plan for how that scope is proven out. We favor lean, tool-driven workflows over moving data by hand, and we would rather build the tool that removes the busywork than staff it.

Special Mentions

  • Relocation provided
  • Travel expected up to 25% of the time to support cross-site and partner coordination
  • Interviews will include a technical assessment
  • Multiple positions available

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Own requirements decomposition, allocation, and traceability for a complex, cross-cutting area of the system with minimal oversight, and set the technical plan for how it is proven out
  • Own the verification approach and its closure for your area - verification requirements, methods, procedures, and the evidence that requirements are met
  • Leverage system safety work for your scope to drive real change in the system and disposition variances/deviations against a clear, risk-based standard
  • Perform root-cause analysis and corrective action on major-scope technical issues
  • Serve as the systems-engineering point of contact for your area to design IPTs, and represent it at engineering and program reviews
  • Drive tool and process improvements - remove manual steps from the requirements and V&V workflow and raise the team's standard for how the work gets done

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in aerospace, systems, or a related engineering field; an advanced degree may substitute for a portion of the experience requirement
  • 5-8 years of experience solving systems-level engineering problems, with demonstrated work in requirements, verification, or system safety; the experience need not have carried a systems-engineering title
  • Demonstrated ownership of a complex, cross-cutting technical area with minimal oversight
  • Working knowledge of interface management (ICDs/IRDs), requirements traceability and verification, and variance/deviation processes
  • Ability to set a technical plan for a scope and drive it to closure across design IPTs without direct authority
  • Proficiency with SE tooling (Jama, DOORS, Cameo, Windchill) and a track record of working in tool-driven workflows
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in an engineering or technical discipline
  • Human spaceflight, crewed vehicle, launch vehicle, or other complex integrated-system experience
  • Experience from another safety-critical or regulated industry (e.g., medical devices, commercial aviation, nuclear, automotive) owning requirements, verification, or safety analysis for a complex product
  • Experience with hazard analyses, safety-critical requirements, and certification against a customer baseline
  • History of introducing a tool or process improvement that was adopted by others and cut manual effort or error rate
  • Experience as a systems-engineering point of contact interfacing with a customer or partner

Base Pay Range for:

CA applicants is $121,023.00 - $169,432.20 CO applicants is $110,938.00 - $155,312.85 WA applicants is $121,023.00 - $169,432.20
