Job description

The role

The Senior Software Developer is a key technical contributor who provides technical leadership, mentorship, and architectural guidance across a small, dynamic development team. In this Calgary-based hybrid position, you will work on a cloud-based geoscience application that leverages advanced technologies to help users derive insights from geoscience data.

Collaborating closely with product designers, domain experts, and back-end developers, you will design and implement intuitive, performant, and visually compelling interfaces in React. A core element of your work will involve integrating with Seequent's 3D visualization library to present complex geoscience data in an interactive, responsive, and scalable way.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Software Design & Architecture: Design and architect complex software applications, components, and modules to deliver performant, reliable, scalable, and maintainable solutions while navigating ambiguous requirements.
  • Frontend Development: Design, code, verify, test, document, and refactor complex programs, scripts, and integration services, with a focus on building visually compelling React interfaces.
  • 3D Integration: Integrate applications with Seequent's 3D visualization library to display complex geoscience data in a responsive and scalable manner.
  • Leadership & Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior developers to support their professional growth and raise the overall technical capability of the team.
  • Peer Review: Lead design and code reviews for colleagues and participate in reviews of your own work.
  • Process Improvement & Research: Enhance existing processes, products, and programs by applying research insights and integrating emerging technologies.
  • Release Management: Coordinate and schedule release activities across multiple teams, ensuring deliverables meet strict quality, security, and compliance standards.
  • Project Management: Define, document, and execute small projects or sub-projects, working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Collaboration: Participate actively in all project phases, collaborating with cross-functional teams to meet user needs and project objectives.
  • Hybrid Work Environment: Work hybrid from the Calgary, AB office (two days a week), with flexibility to support activities across global time zones and provide occasional Tier 3 after-hours support.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, And Experience

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or an equivalent technical field.
  • Professional Experience: 7+ years of experience in relevant software development roles, with a primary focus on frontend web development.
  • Frontend Technologies: Extensive, hands-on experience building web applications using JavaScript, TypeScript, and React.
  • Production Applications: Proven track record of developing, operating, and maintaining customer-facing web applications in production environments, including troubleshooting, monitoring, and performance optimization.
  • 3D Rendering: Practical experience with Three.js or another web-based 3D rendering library.
  • Professional Attributes:
    • Ability to work autonomously within a clear accountability framework while meeting strict time and quality targets.

    • Proficiency in solving complex technical problems through research, creative thinking, and innovative approaches.
    • Excellent communication skills to articulate complex ideas and drive personal and team development.
  • Desirable Assets (Not required, but highly valued):
    • Experience running data science pipelines on the web.
    • Experience with Python and FastAPI (or similar API frameworks).
    • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
    • Experience migrating monolithic enterprise frontend applications to a micro-frontend architecture.
