Job description

SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, but according to established policies and procedures, coordinates the flow of patients, providers and OR (Operating Room) personnel through the ORs. Provides communication services to physicians and OR personnel, taking and relaying messages. Books same-day OR cases via electronic booking or typed booking slip. Works with OR Charge RN and or designee at Davol OR desk and performs related duties as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Answers telephone and uses appropriate telephone techniques and proper identification.
  • Takes and relays messages for physicians and OR personnel, provides paging services to residents and physicians, and otherwise serves as a communication contact for the OR (i.e., receiving updated laboratory reports, calling of X-rays and the like).
  • Reviews the surgery schedule and notifies the nursing unit of the patient and surgery time.
  • Notifies the physician and support medical team of the surgery time. Dispatches Orderlies to transport the patient from the nursing unit to the OR.
  • Coordinates the assignment of OR cases to the rooms, notifying OR personnel of changes in the surgery schedule, delays, and the like.
  • Notifies appropriate nursing personnel of changes in the OR schedule, as well as, support departments such as Anesthesia, Perfusion and the like.
  • Contacts physician’s offices in order to inform them of assigned surgery times.
  • Coordinates the transportation of patients from the OR to recovery areas by notifying Orderlies to transport patients and by verifying that appropriate transportation vehicles are available.
  • Maintains records of all cases processed and assists in generating activity statistics, assist in updating patient profiles and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Orders and stocks need paperwork and office supplies in all perioperative clerical areas.
  • Orders and stocks dietary goods in all perioperative areas.
  • Performs other duties as assigned


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • The interpersonal skills necessary to interface effectively with physicians, OR personnel and others.
  • A high degree of customer service skills is required.
  • A knowledge of basic medical terminology in order to be familiar with OR procedures, laboratory tests, etc.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • The ability to learn department software in order to enter and access information.
  • One to three months of job-related experience (including orientation) is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is occasionally performed under stressful conditions.
