Job description

Front End Cashier - FT 40 hrs. per wk.
Reports To: Front End Manager
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Salary Level: $19.00 - $30.00/hr.
Summary: To provide excellent customer service by using the registers quickly and accurately, check out customer purchases and encourage memberships.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Customer Service –
  • Treat customers in a prompt, friendly, attentive, cheerful, and helpful manner
  • Warmly great customers and end transactions with a pleasant farewell, such as “Thank you for shopping at the Co-op”
  • Have an awareness of customers standing in line and call for back-up so that customers wait only a short time to be checked out
  • Request Member card
  • Assist customer with bagging groceries
  • Become familiar with co-op policies in order to better answer customer questions
  • Refer unresolved questions or problems to the appropriate employees, such as a manager or department head
  • Inform non-members of the benefits of membership and provide them with the membership brochure.

Cashiering –
  • Check out all purchases quickly and accurately
  • Use correct prices and codes and ring items into the correct department
  • Determine total transaction
  • Inform customer of amount, collect payment and make accurate change
  • Assist other cashiers with customer service tasks; i.e., bagging groceries, selling memberships, related paperwork
  • Verify cash at the beginning of shift
  • Balance cash drawer at the end of shift, striving for perfect drawers
  • Do not leave front end for extra tasks or errands unless a second cashier is present
  • Comply with government regulations regarding food stamps
  • Ensure sales of alcohol are only sold to customers 21 years of age or older
  • Additional tasks as assigned by the Front End Manager

Work Environment –
  • Work in a positive, cooperative and friendly manner with fellow co-op employees
  • Arrive and depart promptly according to the front end work schedule
  • Set a positive example for other cashiers and employees
  • Maintain front end area in a clean, organized and orderly condition, free of carts, baskets, and debris
  • Take initiative to stock items or ask for assignments from Manager on Duty when no customers need to be checked out.

Responsibilities to Safety:
  • Protect the safety of self, co-worker's, and BriarPatch Co-op patrons at all times.
  • Report any potentially harmful equipment or situations to the immediate supervisor without delay.
  • Report safety-related accidents and incidents at once to supervisor.
  • Follow all company and safety policies and procedures.
  • Operate equipment in a safe manner that will not lead to injury of self or others.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or GED certificate preferred; previous cashiering/cash handling experience preferred along with customer service experience.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or electronic form.
