Job description

Matrix designs, manufactures, and sells innovative technological products that help keep people safe. Originally focused on the underground coal mining industry, Matrix has expanded into new industrial markets in the United States and globally.
We are currently seeking a versatile Applications Engineer (Sales & Technical) to bridge customer-facing sales activities with hands-on engineering execution. This role is responsible for driving product adoption, supporting system integration, and ensuring successful deployment of Matrix solutions. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise in industrial systems with the ability to engage customers, develop solutions, and support the full lifecycle - from pre-sales through installation and ongoing support. This position works in a team environment at our home office in Newburgh, IN. This is not a remote position.
This position reports to the VP of Industrial Sales/Application Engineering Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Customer Engagement & Sales Support
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with OEMs, B2B customers, and end users
    • Understand customer challenges and develop tailored technical solutions
    • Support and execute sales strategies, including product demonstrations and technical presentations
    • Act as a trusted advisor, guiding customers through evaluation, selection, and implementation
    • Promote hardware and software (SaaS) solutions, clearly communicating value and ROI
  • Technical Application & Engineering Support
    • Interface with electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to define system requirements
    • Design system layouts and ensure proper integration into customer environments
    • Lead or support installation, startup, commissioning, and deployment of systems
    • Troubleshoot system performance issues and implement corrective actions
    • Perform product testing, validation, and field evaluations and document results
  • Product Integration & Continuous Improvement
    • Ensure seamless integration of Matrix technologies into customer operations
    • Conduct field research and testing to support new product development
    • Deliver customer training on system operation, maintenance, and best practices
    • Provide feedback to engineering and product teams to improve solutions
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Work closely with engineering, product management, and sales teams
    • Serve as a primary technical contact for customers and internal stakeholders
    • Support both pre-sales and post-sales technical activities

Qualifications & Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, or related) or equivalent experience
  • Strong background in industrial automation systems (PLCs, HMI, networking)
  • Experience in technical sales or customer-facing engineering roles
  • Knowledge of AI-based systems, safety technologies, or vision systems preferred
  • Experience with SaaS or subscription-based solutions is a plus
  • Ability to design, troubleshoot, and implement integrated systems
  • Strong communication and presentation skills (technical & non-technical audiences)
  • Problem-solving and analytical thinking
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

Working Conditions
  • Travel required (up to 50 - 80%) for customer visits, installations, and industry events
