Perception Algorithm Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Perception Algorithm Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Perception Algorithm Engineer, you need a strong background in computer vision, machine learning, and programming (typically C++ or Python), often supported by a degree in computer science, robotics, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like TensorFlow, PyTorch, OpenCV, and ROS, as well as experience with sensor data (e.g., LiDAR, cameras), is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills for this role. These skills are vital to develop robust perception systems that enable autonomous vehicles and robots to interpret and interact safely with complex real-world environments.

What is a Perception Algorithm Engineer?

A Perception Algorithm Engineer is a professional who develops algorithms that enable machines—such as autonomous vehicles or robots—to interpret and understand sensory data from their environment. This typically involves processing data from cameras, lidar, radar, and other sensors to identify objects, track movement, and understand surroundings. Perception Algorithm Engineers work with computer vision, sensor fusion, and machine learning techniques to create reliable and efficient perception systems. Their work is crucial in making machines aware of their surroundings and enabling them to respond appropriately. They often collaborate with hardware, software, and robotics teams to integrate their algorithms into real-world applications.

What are some common challenges faced by Perception Algorithm Engineers when integrating their solutions into autonomous systems?

Perception Algorithm Engineers often encounter challenges when ensuring their algorithms perform reliably in diverse real-world environments, such as varying lighting, weather conditions, and sensor noise. Integrating algorithms with hardware requires close collaboration with robotics and systems engineering teams to optimize performance and latency. Additionally, balancing accuracy with computational efficiency is crucial, as perception modules must run in real time on embedded systems. Addressing these challenges involves rigorous testing, continuous model improvement, and effective cross-functional communication.

Job description

You will be an Software/Algorithm Engineer on Aeronautics Sensor Fusion team, working at the forefront of sensor fusion, perception, and autonomy for fighter and unmanned platforms. In this role you will have a significant impact on shaping the future of Sensor Fusion across Aeronautics, defining the vision for our current and next generation platforms, and integrating our most advanced technologies. If you thrive on pushing the envelope, have a passion for difficult algorithmic challenges, and are passionate about turning novel sensor concepts into flight ready software, this position on our Emerging Technology Sensor Fusion team is for you. The team is seeking an Software/Algorithm Engineer with a strong background in sensor fusion, algorithm development, and autonomous perception to support current and future development efforts. The successful applicant will own the full lifecycle of key algorithms that enable aircraft based fusion and autonomous decision making. Responsibilities include contributing to software requirements, algorithm design, mode development, design reviews, and testing of operational flight ready, sensor fusion software. As an Software/Algorithm Engineer on the Sensor Fusion team, you will be critical to ensuring we stay “ahead of ready” and continue to lead the Sensor Fusion domain. In this role, you will:
- Develop the vision for integration of new technologies, sensors, and capabilities into our programs.
- Write high quality, embedded C++ Sensor Fusion software products that are deployed across multiple platforms and run on real-time operating systems.
- Stage algorithms in high-fidelity simulation for feasibility studies and operational analysis, pushing the operational effectivity of our warfighter.
- Represent the organization as a subject matter expert in your sub-domain.
- Coordinate with other fusion sub-disciplines to ensure integration of your algorithms across core fusion domains.
- Define pathways for incorporation into a highly reusable, next generation multi platform Fusion Engine that will serve future autonomous systems. Basic Qualifications:
-- 5+ years experience in sensor fusion sub-domain(s) (e.g., state estimation, identification, correlation, sensor tasking) or strong experience across multiple domains including signal processing, artificial intelligence, autonomy/perception, artificial intelligence, navigation, or control systems in a sensor/systems application.
-- 5+ years experience with algorithms used in development of sensor modes for RF and/or IR based sensor systems.
-- 10+ years experience with Real Time Operating Systems development in C, C++, or Rust (Windows/Linux).
-- High-fidelity prototyping/simulation in MATLAB or Python.
