Perception Algorithm Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Perception Algorithm Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Perception Algorithm Engineer, you need a strong background in computer vision, machine learning, and programming (typically C++ or Python), often supported by a degree in computer science, robotics, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like TensorFlow, PyTorch, OpenCV, and ROS, as well as experience with sensor data (e.g., LiDAR, cameras), is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills for this role. These skills are vital to develop robust perception systems that enable autonomous vehicles and robots to interpret and interact safely with complex real-world environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Perception Algorithm Engineers when integrating their solutions into autonomous systems?

Perception Algorithm Engineers often encounter challenges when ensuring their algorithms perform reliably in diverse real-world environments, such as varying lighting, weather conditions, and sensor noise. Integrating algorithms with hardware requires close collaboration with robotics and systems engineering teams to optimize performance and latency. Additionally, balancing accuracy with computational efficiency is crucial, as perception modules must run in real time on embedded systems. Addressing these challenges involves rigorous testing, continuous model improvement, and effective cross-functional communication.

What is a Perception Algorithm Engineer?

A Perception Algorithm Engineer is a professional who develops algorithms that enable machines—such as autonomous vehicles or robots—to interpret and understand sensory data from their environment. This typically involves processing data from cameras, lidar, radar, and other sensors to identify objects, track movement, and understand surroundings. Perception Algorithm Engineers work with computer vision, sensor fusion, and machine learning techniques to create reliable and efficient perception systems. Their work is crucial in making machines aware of their surroundings and enabling them to respond appropriately. They often collaborate with hardware, software, and robotics teams to integrate their algorithms into real-world applications.

We build robots that build homes.
We collaborate with traditional home builders to enhance their construction process through speed, safety, and precision. Having already delivered framing components for multiple houses, our innovative building method is driven by a versatile team with deep experience in robotics, computer vision, optimization, mechanical design, pcb layout, and algorithm design.
What you'll do at BotBuilt
You'll work on a variety of projects providing guidance to engineers.
- Architect solutions that involve the selection of sensors, mechanisms, and algorithms by working closely with the rest of team.
- Develop algorithms for mobile robot localization.
- Develop constrained motion planning algorithms.
- Optimize motion planning algorithms.
- Work closely with junior robotics staff to develop novel motion planning, control, and perception algorithms.
- Be an integral part of an interdisciplinary team to understand the problem, game out solutions, prototype, and refine.
Your qualifications
We seek a robotics scientist with 8 years of experience or a Ph.D. in Robotics.
- Experience with SLAM, Computer Vision, Motion Planning, or Diffusion Policies.
- Proficiency with C/C++ and Python.
- Familiarity with hardware in the loop testing.
- Experience with the simulation platforms for robot testing.
- Experience with various forms of extrinsic calibration will set you apart.
Your role will be to set technical direction for a team of engineers, and to help debug complex systems.
Company Perks
- Competitive compensation and equity options.
- Comprehensive health, vision, and dental insurance for you and dependents.
- Inclusive 401(k) match.
- Generous PTO flexibility.
- Daily catered lunches and an array of snacks.
- Access to our company gym.
The BotBuilt Team
Our team is a distinguished collective of experts, including alumni engineers from NASA, veterans of the U.S. Special Operations Forces, and doctorates in Robotics and Civil Engineering. Bound by a shared mission, we harness advanced technology to address the critical challenge of housing shortages. Our unique blend of experience and passion positions us at the forefront of innovation in this field, poised to make significant impact.
The pay range for this role is:
120,000 - 150,000 USD per year (Staging Factory)
