What is a per diem job?

Per diem means ‘per day’ or ‘for each day.’ These jobs are paid on a daily basis as opposed to an hourly, part-time, or annual basis. They usually consist of short-term or temporary employment. Per diem workers may be filling in for a full-time employee who is on sick leave or vacation, helping out during a busy season, or possibly performing job duties that are not frequently needed.

What does per diem mean in a job context?

In a job context, 'per diem' refers to employees who work on an as-needed basis rather than a fixed, regular schedule. Per diem workers are typically paid a daily rate or by the shift, and their hours can vary depending on the employer's needs. This type of position is common in industries like healthcare, education, and hospitality, where staffing needs can fluctuate. Per diem jobs offer flexibility for both the worker and the employer, but they usually do not include the same benefits as full-time positions.

What are some common scheduling challenges for per diem employees, and how can they be managed effectively?

Per Diem employees often face unpredictable or fluctuating work schedules, which can make it challenging to plan personal commitments or maintain consistent income. To manage this, it's helpful to communicate regularly with staffing coordinators, remain flexible, and promptly respond to shift offers. Many organizations use online scheduling systems or apps, which allow Per Diem staff to view and accept available shifts in real time, giving them more control over their work-life balance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Nurse, you need a solid clinical background, an active nursing license, and the flexibility to adapt to various healthcare settings. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, charting software, and institutional protocols is essential for efficient workflow. Strong time management, adaptability, and excellent communication skills help you quickly integrate into new teams and provide consistent patient care. These skills and qualities are crucial because per diem nurses must deliver high-quality care while adjusting to different environments and shifting demands.

What is the difference between Per Diem vs Registered Nurse?

AspectPer DiemRegistered Nurse
CredentialsNo specific credentials required, but often healthcare experience neededState licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN), with required certifications
Work EnvironmentVaries; hospitals, clinics, temporary assignmentsHospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities
Employer & Industry UsageStaffing agencies, healthcare facilities for temporary coverageHospitals, healthcare organizations, clinics

Per Diem nurses work on a temporary, as-needed basis without long-term commitments, often through staffing agencies. Registered Nurses are licensed healthcare professionals providing ongoing patient care. While both roles are vital in healthcare, Per Diem positions offer flexibility, whereas Registered Nurses typically have permanent or long-term roles.

Job description

Hematology / Oncology MD - Per Diem
Hartford HealthCare, the largest integrated healthcare delivery system in Connecticut, seeks a BC/BE Hematology/Oncology provider to join a rapidly growing practice at Hartford Hospital for a per diem position.
The mission of Hartford Healthcare Cancer Institute, which oversees over 40 oncologists, is on the highest quality patient centered multidisciplinary care, patient experience and clinical research trial enrollment. Over the past 10 years we have partnered with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and developed a collaborative relationship for oversight of standards of care, education and clinical research.
This is a flexible, low-pressure opportunity designed around your schedule and goals - whether that means:
• A fixed, predictable schedule of clinic days each week or every other week
• Covering general medical oncology or focusing on a disease site you know well
• No call, or a very limited call schedule, by arrangement
You'll be fully supported by a well-established practice - a talented medical oncology-hematology faculty group, experienced advanced practice providers, nurse navigators, and system-wide Disease Management Teams that ensure one standard of care across Hartford HealthCare's eight-hospital network, which cares for 1 in 3 Connecticut residents. Administrative and clinical infrastructure - scheduling, EMR, tumor boards, and clinical trial support - are already in place, so you can focus on the part you love most: seeing patients.
Please remit a copy of your CV and Cover Letter to Jonathan Nye, Physician Recruiter, at Jonathan.Nye@hhchealth.org , or call/text (860) 657-6087.
Qualifications:
• Licensed or eligible to be licensed in the State of Connecticut
• Board Certified or Board Eligible in Medical Oncology
