What is a per diem virtual occupational therapist?

A Per Diem Virtual Occupational Therapist is a licensed healthcare professional who provides occupational therapy services to clients remotely, typically via video calls or other online platforms, on an as-needed or 'per diem' basis. Instead of working a fixed schedule, they are called in to work when there is demand, offering flexibility for both the therapist and the employer. Their role involves assessing, planning, and implementing therapy interventions to help clients develop, recover, or maintain daily living and work skills. Virtual occupational therapists use digital tools to conduct assessments, guide exercises, and track client progress. This job is ideal for therapists seeking flexible hours and the ability to work from home.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem virtual occupational therapist?

To thrive as a Per Diem Virtual Occupational Therapist, you need a degree in occupational therapy, state licensure, and strong assessment and intervention planning skills. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, electronic documentation systems, and secure communication tools is typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and adaptability are vital soft skills for engaging clients remotely and managing fluctuating caseloads. These competencies ensure effective virtual therapy delivery, client progress, and compliance with healthcare standards in a flexible work environment.

How does a per diem virtual occupational therapist typically collaborate with other healthcare professionals while working remotely?

As a per diem virtual occupational therapist, you'll often collaborate with a multidisciplinary team that may include physicians, physical therapists, speech therapists, and case managers. Communication is primarily conducted via secure telehealth platforms, emails, and virtual team meetings to coordinate patient care, share progress updates, and discuss treatment plans. Building strong relationships and maintaining clear, frequent communication is essential for delivering coordinated and effective care, even when working remotely and on a flexible schedule.
