Description
Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, performs preventive and corrective maintenance and inspection of Train Control Systems and related signal equipment and interface.

Examples of Duties
  • Inspects, tests, and performs corrective and preventative maintenance of wayside signals, interlocking, centralized traffic control (CTC), automatic train control (ATC), and grade crossing warning devices, including signal bonding, track transmitters, and receivers, impedance bonds, power switches, multiplexing equipment, energized equipment up to 480 volts, and electromechanical signal devices
  • Responds to equipment failure, determines the cause, and restores equipment to service
  • Maintains records and presents reports of inspection, testing, and repair
  • Monitors signal work performed by outside contractors
  • Performs new construction or modifications to existing systems
  • Performs other related duties
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associates of Science degree or the successful completion of a two-year/full-time Electronics Technology or related program from an accredited electronics schoolOR
  • 2 years' of journey-level experience performing inspection, testing, repair, and maintenance of electromechanical or electronic systems and equipment with experience on railroad signaling equipment preferred
  • Must possess or be able to acquire a valid California Class A Commercial driver's license

  • Methods, materials, equipment, and safety procedures used in the inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of train control systems
  • Standard operating procedures used for entering and working in a live track environment

Abilites
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions and procedures
  • Communicate effectively with others
  • Safely operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment
  • Troubleshoot and repair various electronic devices and printed circuit boards
  • Read and understand schematic diagrams
  • Use standard electronic test equipment
  • Apply safety procedures in a hazardous environment
  • Safely operate Metro vehicles
  • Perform strenuous tasks on occasion
  • Work at heights up to 50 feet
  • Tolerate outdoor work and night work
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Special Conditions
  • Must have normal color vision
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Must be able to work in an environment with energized overhead catenary or contact rail system, power distribution equipment, and long-line freight and vehicular traffic
  • Must provide own tools of the trade
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days per week
  • Positions in this classification are considered safety sensitive under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations
