What is a Per Diem SANE RN?

A Per Diem SANE RN is a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) who works on an as-needed or on-call basis rather than a fixed schedule. These registered nurses are specially trained to provide comprehensive care to sexual assault survivors, including conducting forensic exams, collecting evidence, and offering emotional support. The 'per diem' designation means they may be called in for shifts as cases arise, providing flexibility but not guaranteed hours. SANE RNs play a crucial role in both patient advocacy and the legal process by ensuring that evidence is collected properly for potential prosecution.

What are some common challenges faced by Per Diem SANE RNs, and how can they prepare for them?

Per Diem SANE RNs often face challenges such as responding to unpredictable and urgent cases, managing emotional stress from handling sensitive situations, and maintaining competency with less frequent casework. To prepare, it's helpful to stay current with forensic nursing best practices, participate in ongoing training, and seek support from experienced colleagues. Building strong communication skills and fostering relationships with multidisciplinary teams, such as law enforcement and social services, can also help navigate the complexities of the role.
