  • Job Title: Arbor Groundsman
  • Location: Sterling, VA
Position Summary
Responsible for supporting arbor crews in the safe and efficient completion of tree care, pruning, and removal operations. Performs ground labor, operates equipment, and ensures clean, safe job sites.
Core Responsibilities (Ground Operations)
  • Perform arbor ground labor tasks as directed by Crew Lead
  • Feed brush and limbs into chippers safely
  • Assist climbers by hoisting tools and equipment
  • Collect, pile, and remove debris from job sites
  • Load debris and materials into trucks
  • Clear properties of tree debris, stumps, and limbs
  • Maintain job site cleanliness and organization
Equipment Operation amp; Maintenance
  • Operate equipment safely, including:
    • Brush chippers, stump grinders, loaders
    • Chainsaws, pole pruners, power saws
    • Backpack blowers and hand tools
  • Clean, inspect, sharpen, and lubricate tools and equipment
Safety amp; Compliance
  • Follow all safety protocols and PPE requirements
  • Adhere to company policies (attendance, dress code, weather, reporting procedures)
  • Demonstrate hazard awareness and safe work practices
  • Support emergency response and aerial rescue when required
Advanced / Secondary Duties
  • Assist with climbing and pruning trees (15+ feet) as needed
  • Perform cabling and bracing support
  • Assist with specialized pruning and tree removals
  • Support rigging and rope operations
Qualifications
Experience
  • 6+ months of tree care, landscaping, or outdoor labor experience preferred
Licenses amp; Certifications (Preferred or Obtain Within Timeline)
  • Valid driver’s license
  • CPR amp; First Aid (within 3 months)
  • Aerial Rescue Certification (within 3 months)
  • TCIA Certifications (within 6 months):
    • Chainsaw Operator Specialist
    • Ground Operations Specialist
    • Tree Care Safety Specialist
  • Chipper Operator Certification
Skills amp; Knowledge
  • Basic understanding of tree care, pruning, and tree identification
  • Knowledge of safe equipment operation and hazard recognition
  • Basic rigging, knots, and rope handling
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing, and lifting
  • Lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • Ability to work at heights and in physically demanding conditions
  • Visual ability including depth perception and focus adjustment
Work Environment
  • Outdoor work in all weather conditions
  • Frequent exposure to loud noise and heavy equipment
  • Occasional exposure to dust, fumes, and chemicals
