Job description

SCOPE OF POSITION:
The Registered Nurse in the Surgical Services Section utilizes the nursing process, diagnoses to treat human responses to actual or potential problems and is accountable to the patient, family, and peers for the totality of work performed in order that the organization can fulfill its primary mission of providing quality health care within the community. Population serviced includes adult, geriatric patients and upon occasion, adolescents. Reports to the OR Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assess, plan, and implement a individualized plan of care in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases.
• Prepare operating rooms, surgical instruments and equipment according to procedure requirements.
• Maintain awareness while in the surgery suite of the patient, surgeon, anesthesia responses, and overall condition during surgery. Maintain strict adherence to infection control and safety protocols.
• Maintain timely and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to ensure seamless surgical care, collaborating with surgeons. anesthesia and other healthcare professionals.
• Contributes to Quality Improvement activities and participates in the departmental Quality Improvement Program.
• Clear communication with the patient and their families.
• Be familiar and adhere to the regulations of AORN.
• Perform other related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut
• Minimum of 1-2 years of nursing experience in the operating room, successful completion of the periop 101 course, or ability to successfully complete periop 101 course required.
• Certification in Perioperative Nursing (CNOR), preferred.
• Strong critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills.
• Ability to work in a time-oriented environment including exposure to all patient elements, i.e. blood borne pathogens, etc.
• Physical requirements: Able to push, pull and lift up to 50 lbs using provided equipment or additional manpower as needed. Standing and walking for extended periods of time wearing a lead apron.
• Must have basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to Waterbury Hospital procedures.
