What is a per diem radiology tech?

A Per Diem Radiology Tech is a radiologic technologist who works on an as-needed or on-call basis, rather than having a full-time or part-time regular schedule. These professionals perform diagnostic imaging examinations, such as X-rays, to assist physicians in diagnosing and treating patients. Per diem positions offer flexibility, as techs can choose shifts based on availability, but hours and benefits may vary compared to permanent staff roles. This role is common in hospitals, clinics, and imaging centers that require extra staffing during busy periods or to cover absences.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a per diem radiology tech?

To thrive as a Per Diem Radiology Tech, you need a solid understanding of radiologic procedures, anatomy, patient positioning, and an active ARRT certification or equivalent state licensure. Familiarity with digital imaging equipment, PACS, and hospital information systems is typically required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and attention to detail help you deliver quality care efficiently in varying clinical environments. These skills and qualities are critical to ensuring accurate diagnostic results, patient safety, and seamless integration with healthcare teams.

How does the flexible per diem schedule of a radiology tech impact daily workflow and collaboration with the healthcare team?

As a Per Diem Radiology Tech, you may work variable shifts depending on department needs, which requires adaptability to different teams and workflows. You'll often be called in to cover for regular staff absences or peak periods, so strong communication and quick acclimation to new environments are essential. Collaboration with radiologists, nurses, and other technicians remains a core part of the role, and you'll need to efficiently integrate with diverse teams to ensure patient care is seamless. This structure offers exposure to a variety of cases and can enhance your skills, but also requires flexibility and a proactive approach to building rapport with colleagues.
