What is a per diem physician assistant?

A Per Diem Physician Assistant is a licensed healthcare professional who works on an as-needed basis, rather than having a set full-time or part-time schedule. They may fill in for regular staff, cover shifts during busy periods, or provide extra support in clinics, hospitals, or other healthcare settings. This flexible arrangement allows them to choose when and where they work, often leading to a varied and dynamic work environment. Per diem positions can be ideal for those seeking a better work-life balance or supplemental income.

What does a per diem physician assistant do?

A physician assistant (PA) provides health care and medical services for patients under the supervision of a licensed doctor. As a per diem physician assistant, you get a set payment for each day that you work. PAs examine and diagnose patients, provide treatments, order tests, and perform other duties approved by a physician. Your responsibilities are the same as those of a full-time PA, but you receive assignments in different locations, work to a fill-in PA for full-time staff members, or work temporarily when medical facilities expect an unusually high number of patients. You may switch frequently or stay at a facility for weeks at a time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem physician assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Physician Assistant, you need a master's degree in physician assistant studies, national certification (PA-C), and state licensure, along with strong clinical assessment and medical decision-making skills. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, point-of-care testing devices, and standard medical protocols is typically required. Adaptability, effective communication, and the ability to quickly integrate into new clinical environments are standout soft skills. These competencies ensure high-quality, flexible patient care and seamless collaboration with diverse healthcare teams in various settings.

What are some common challenges faced by per diem physician assistants, and how can they be addressed?

Per Diem Physician Assistants often work in multiple departments or facilities, which can present challenges such as adapting quickly to new workflows, electronic health record systems, and varying team dynamics. To succeed, it's important to be flexible, proactive in asking questions, and efficient in communication with both clinical staff and supervisors. Building strong organizational skills and maintaining up-to-date credentials will also ensure smooth transitions between assignments and help foster positive working relationships.
