What is a per diem medical biller?

A Per Diem Medical Biller is a healthcare professional who handles medical billing tasks on an as-needed or temporary basis, rather than as a full-time or part-time employee. They are responsible for submitting insurance claims, following up on unpaid claims, and ensuring accurate billing for medical services. Per diem positions offer flexibility in scheduling, making them ideal for those seeking a non-traditional work arrangement or supplemental income. These professionals typically work for hospitals, clinics, or medical billing companies and must be knowledgeable about coding, insurance regulations, and healthcare reimbursement processes.

How does a per diem medical biller typically manage workload and priorities when working with multiple healthcare providers?

As a Per Diem Medical Biller, you may be assigned to different healthcare facilities or departments based on immediate needs, which means your workload can vary significantly from week to week. Effective time management and adaptability are essential, as you must quickly familiarize yourself with each provider's billing systems, coding standards, and payer requirements. Communication is also key—you'll often collaborate with medical staff and other billers to ensure accurate and timely claim submissions. While the flexible schedule offers variety, it also requires strong organizational skills to handle shifting priorities and multiple assignments efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem medical biller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Medical Biller, you need a solid understanding of medical billing procedures, coding (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS), and healthcare regulations, typically supported by relevant experience or certification such as a Certified Professional Biller (CPB). Familiarity with billing software, electronic health record (EHR) systems, and insurance claim platforms is essential. Attention to detail, time management, and strong communication skills help you accurately process claims and resolve discrepancies in a flexible, independent work setting. These skills ensure timely reimbursement, compliance with regulations, and efficient financial operations for healthcare providers.
