What is a per diem janitor?

A Per Diem Janitor is a cleaning professional who works on an as-needed basis rather than as a full-time or part-time employee. They are typically called in to cover shifts when regular staff are unavailable or during periods of high demand. Per diem janitors perform typical custodial duties such as cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining facilities, but their schedules can vary greatly depending on the employer's needs. This flexible arrangement is common in hospitals, schools, and large office buildings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem janitor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Janitor, you need basic knowledge of cleaning procedures, safety protocols, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with cleaning equipment, chemical handling, and sometimes OSHA safety certifications is typically required. Attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work independently are essential soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities ensure that facilities remain clean, safe, and well-maintained, supporting the health and comfort of all occupants.

What does a typical shift look like for a per diem janitor, and how is scheduling usually handled?

As a Per Diem Janitor, your shifts are often scheduled on an as-needed basis, which provides flexibility but also means your hours may vary from week to week. You might be called in to cover staff absences, special events, or peak periods, and your responsibilities will typically include cleaning assigned areas, restocking supplies, and reporting maintenance issues. Coordination with a facilities manager or supervisor is common, and you may work independently or as part of a small team depending on the size of the facility. This arrangement is ideal for those seeking flexible work and can sometimes lead to more permanent opportunities within the organization.
