To thrive as a Per Diem Inland Barge crew member, you need knowledge of barge operations, basic seamanship, and safety protocols, typically supported by a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) and sometimes a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC). Familiarity with marine radios, navigation tools, and deck machinery is important for daily operations. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and adaptability are crucial soft skills in this role. Teamwork is critical, as barge crews must collaborate closely to ensure safety, compliance, and efficient operations while navigating inland waterways. The environment can be demanding, but it also offers opportunities to gain hands-on experience and network with seasoned maritime professionals.

What is a Per Diem Inland Barge worker?

A Per Diem Inland Barge worker is a maritime professional who works on inland barges, typically transporting goods along rivers and other inland waterways. The 'per diem' designation means they are paid a daily rate rather than a salaried or hourly wage, and they may be hired on an as-needed basis for specific trips or periods. Their duties can include handling cargo, maintaining the barge, assisting with navigation, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. This role often requires flexibility, as assignments and schedules can vary based on shipping demands.
