Job description

A Barge Logistics Manager is responsible for overseeing the safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation of aggregate materials by use of U.S. Inland Waterways. This role manages scheduling, cargo operations, and vendor coordination to ensure timely delivery and optimal utilization of barge assets.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES OF POSITION:

  • Follow all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to communicating, improving, and adhering to safety policies in all work environments and areas
  • Plan, schedule, and optimize barge movements across inland waterway systems.
  • Coordinate with terminals, ports, towing companies, and customers to ensure smooth cargo operations.
  • Monitor vessel locations, transit times, and weather or river conditions that impact operations.
  • Responsible for updating, monitoring, and tracking all barge-related costs and data.
  • Analyze performance data to improve routing, turnaround times, and asset utilization.
  • Analyze all historical barge-related data with the ability to identify trends, potential cost savings, and performance.
  • Daily maintenance and distribution of Boat Schedules used for planning.
  • Resolve operational issues such as delays, equipment failures, or scheduling conflicts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • Must have experience in transportation, logistics, or maritime operations.
  • Experience with inland barge or bulk commodity logistics is strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of inland waterways (e.g., Mississippi River system, Intracoastal waterways, etc.)
  • This position requires a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to pass random drug testing. Knowledge of OSHA requirements is preferred.
  • Must be able to travel 30% of the time.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Able to develop effective internal and external relationships
  • Strong knowledge of logistics, conditions, geography, industrial sights, and boat management
  • Proficiency in logistics coordination, able to handle multi-level and multi-change situations
  • Detail-oriented and process-oriented, along with being highly organized
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work environment is a combination of office-based logistics planning and on-site port/terminal visits
  • May require extended hours, weekends, or on-call availability depending on operations
  • Exposure to noise, vibration, vehicle exhaust and dust
  • Ability to walk and stand on uneven terrain and on slippery surfaces
  • Corrected hearing and vision to normal range
