What is a per diem infusion nurse?

A Per Diem Infusion Nurse is a registered nurse who administers intravenous (IV) medications, fluids, or blood products to patients, typically on an as-needed or flexible basis. Unlike full-time staff, per diem nurses work shifts based on the facility's immediate needs, which means their schedules can vary greatly. They often work in hospitals, clinics, or home healthcare settings, providing specialized care for patients receiving infusions for conditions such as infections, cancer, or autoimmune diseases. This role requires strong clinical skills, adaptability, and the ability to work independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem infusion nurse?

To thrive as a Per Diem Infusion Nurse, you need a solid background in intravenous therapy, medication administration, and patient assessment, typically requiring an active RN license and experience in infusion nursing. Familiarity with infusion pumps, electronic health records (EHRs), and safety protocols is essential, and certification such as CRNI (Certified Registered Nurse Infusion) is often preferred. Exceptional interpersonal skills, adaptability, and attention to detail help nurses build rapport with patients and manage a variety of clinical settings. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate care delivery for patients receiving complex infusion therapies on a flexible, as-needed basis.

How does the schedule flexibility of a per diem infusion nurse impact team collaboration and patient care?

As a Per Diem Infusion Nurse, you have the flexibility to choose your shifts, which allows for a better work-life balance. However, this flexible schedule can sometimes make coordinating with the rest of the nursing team more challenging, especially when continuity of care is essential for patients receiving ongoing infusion therapy. To address this, many facilities use detailed handoff protocols and electronic health records to ensure seamless communication between staff members. Being proactive in communicating your availability and staying updated on patient plans can help maintain high standards of care and foster strong teamwork.
