What is a per diem inbox nurse practitioner?

A Per Diem Inbox Nurse Practitioner is a nurse practitioner who works on an as-needed basis, primarily managing patient care remotely through electronic health record (EHR) inboxes. Their duties often include reviewing and responding to patient messages, lab results, prescription refills, and coordinating care with other healthcare professionals. This role allows for flexible scheduling and is essential for ensuring timely patient communication and follow-up, even outside of traditional clinic hours. Per diem positions offer both employers and practitioners flexibility and help maintain continuity of care.

What are the typical responsibilities of a per diem inbox nurse practitioner, and how do they differ from traditional nurse practitioner roles?

A Per Diem Inbox Nurse Practitioner primarily manages patient care through electronic health record (EHR) systems, focusing on reviewing and responding to patient messages, lab results, and prescription requests. Unlike traditional NP roles that emphasize in-person patient visits, this position is more centered on remote, asynchronous communication and care coordination. The work is often flexible, allowing for varied hours and the ability to support multiple providers or teams. Effective time management and strong written communication skills are essential, as the role requires handling a high volume of electronic correspondence efficiently while ensuring quality patient care.

To thrive as a Per Diem Inbox Nurse Practitioner, you need advanced clinical knowledge, an active NP license, experience in patient triage, and strong decision-making skills. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and secure patient communication platforms is essential. Excellent written communication, adaptability, and time-management abilities help you efficiently address patient inquiries and collaborate with care teams remotely.
