Job description

Job Title: First Class Marine Machinist

Location: Newport News, VA

Job Type: Full-Time

Pay Range: $35.00/hour

Per Diem: $120/day (Non-Local Employees Only)

Overview: We are seeking experienced First Class Marine Machinists to support shipbuilding and ship repair operations in Newport News, VA. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience installing, maintaining, and aligning shipboard propulsion systems and machinery. This position requires strong mechanical aptitude, the ability to read technical drawings, and experience working in commercial or naval shipyard environments.

Responsibilities

  • Install and align main engines, propulsion systems, and shipboard machinery
  • Perform valve overhaul and maintenance on steam and WOG valves
  • Install and repair pumps, motors, compressors, and hydraulic components
  • Perform hydrostatic testing, lube oil flushing, and system cleanliness procedures
  • Install heat exchangers, condensers, turbines, and diesel engines
  • Perform shafting, bearing work, and liner fitting
  • Install shipboard equipment including anchor windlasses, winches, cranes, and elevators
  • Assist with boiler operations, distilling plant testing, and AC/refrigeration systems
  • Operate lathes, boring bars, portable milling machines, and drilling equipment
  • Perform drilling, tapping, flange makeup, and alignment procedures
  • Utilize lapping and blue-checking tools to ensure proper fit and alignment
  • Follow all shipyard safety procedures and quality standards

Qualifications

  • Minimum four (4+) years of commercial or naval experience as a First-Class Machinist
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations related to shipbuilding and ship repair
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and diagrams
  • Working knowledge of shipbuilding terminology and ship systems
  • Experience using precision measuring tools, including micrometers, rulers, and related instruments
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
