How does working as a Per Diem Contract Psych RN differ from a full-time psychiatric nursing role in terms of scheduling and team integration?

As a Per Diem Contract Psych RN, you'll typically have greater flexibility in choosing your shifts, which is ideal for those seeking work-life balance or supplementary income. However, this flexibility also means you might not have a consistent schedule or guaranteed hours, and integrating with the core team can require extra initiative on your part. You'll often work with different staff and patients, so adaptability and strong communication skills are essential. While you may not participate in every team meeting or long-term care planning, your role is vital in providing quality patient care and supporting the team during high-demand periods.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Per Diem Contract Psych RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Contract Psych RN, you need a solid background in psychiatric nursing, crisis intervention, and a current RN license with relevant experience in mental health settings. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), psychiatric assessment tools, and de-escalation techniques is typically required. Strong communication, emotional resilience, and adaptability help nurses excel in rapidly changing, high-stress environments. These skills ensure safe, effective patient care and support the multidisciplinary team in delivering comprehensive mental health services.

At Willow Springs Center, we seek high performing, compassionate professionals dedicated to impacting the lives of youth ages 6 to 17 years of age. Our nurses participate in multi-disciplinary treatment teams and collaborate with professional and para-professional staff to ensure optimum care for our special patients. Nurses administer medications as prescribed by a physician or designee and ensure correct time, dosage and appropriate route of administration while monitoring patients for medication side effects and/or allergic reaction.
