What is a per diem care partner?

A Per Diem Care Partner is a healthcare worker who assists patients with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, and mobility on an as-needed, flexible schedule. Unlike full-time staff, per diem care partners are scheduled based on staffing needs and their availability, which can vary from week to week. They commonly work in hospitals, assisted living facilities, or home healthcare settings, providing essential support to patients and nursing teams. This role requires compassion, adaptability, and strong communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem care partner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Care Partner, you need a solid understanding of basic patient care, assistance with daily living activities, and often a high school diploma, with some employers requiring Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), patient tracking systems, and safety protocols is typically necessary. Compassion, reliability, and strong communication skills help you build trust with patients and collaborate effectively with healthcare teams. These competencies ensure safe, responsive care for patients while supporting the smooth operation of healthcare facilities on an as-needed basis.

How does scheduling and shift flexibility typically work for a per diem care partner?

Per Diem Care Partners enjoy a flexible work schedule, often selecting shifts based on availability and the needs of the healthcare facility. While this provides an excellent work-life balance, it can also mean that hours are not guaranteed and may vary week to week. Consistent communication with the staffing coordinator is important to secure preferred shifts. In many organizations, Per Diem Care Partners can pick up extra shifts during staff shortages or high census periods, offering opportunities for additional income and diverse work experiences.

What is the difference between Per Diem Care Partner vs Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)?
